In an incredible moment honoring the memory of the late Alfred Pennyworth, Nightwing just used his billion-dollar inheritance to make the world a better place. In Nightwing #83, Dick Grayson reveals to the public he's putting his money where his mouth is in his efforts to make Bludhaven safer and more sustainable. The hero realizes that no single person should have so much money when there are those in desperate need in his own community.
Earlier this year, DC Comics revealed Alfred Pennyworth made Nightwing the chief heir to his estate. When Pennyworth was killed by Bane, his entire fortune was transferred to Dick Grayson. It left the Nightwing with more money than he could ever dream of. However, Alfred knew that Nightwing was the best person to leave the large sum to, as he believed the hero would use the money to help people in need. Now, Dick is proving Alfred right.
In Nightwing #83 by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott, Dick meets up with some of his closest allies to enact his plan of giving away his fortune. Nightwing meets with a doctor at a free clinic, chats with Lucius Fox about setting the plan and motion, and even shares his plan with Superman, who tells him he's a lot like Alfred. The following day Dick meets with the press and reveals he's giving away his money and establishing one of the world's "largest, self-sustaining, purely philanthropic foundations."
Dick says that nobody in Bludhaven will be living on the streets within the next month - as nobody should be freezing as the weather gets colder. He says the donation is phase one of his plan and that he's tired of seeing money used as an enforcement technique. Instead, Dick wants to make sure the most vulnerable aren't blamed and punished for their situations but offered much-needed assistance instead. He adds he's working on eliminating poverty in Bludhaven and is working to better programs, including employment, prisoner rehabilitation, public transportation, health care, a guaranteed living wage, and more. Dick says the initiative will be called the "Alfred Pennyworth Foundation."
Nightwing's efforts are tremendous, as even Batman calls him and tells Dick he honored Alfred, while thanking him. It's rare to see a person with wealth in both the comic book and real-life world using their money purely for good, but in Nightwing's case, he's honoring Alfred in the best way imaginable by making life better for everyone around him. It's one of the most heroic things you'll ever see a hero do. Nightwing #83 is in comic book stores now.
