Warning: contains preview images for Nightwing #87!

Fan-favorite character Nightwing gets the ultimate fan-service cover in a special variant for Nightwing #87, on sale in print and digital December 21. Nightwing, celebrated by fans as the DC Universe’s ultimate sex symbol, recently adopted a three-legged dog named Haley ("Bitewing" to fans). In this new cover by Jamal Campbell, fans get to see some of Dick's rare downtime with his new puppy.

Nightwing is Dick Grayson, the first Robin. As he grew to adulthood, leaving Gotham for college, he began to realize the Robin persona no longer suited him, and in 1984’s Tales of the Teen Titans #44, he adopted the name of Nightwing, with a new costume to match. Since then, Nightwing has become one of DC’s most respected heroes - even Superman recently asked Nightwing to be there for his son Jon while he is away on Warworld. In addition to the respect of his peers, Nightwing has become a sex symbol, with frequent allusions to his well-defined butt and chiseled abs. In recent issues of Nightwing, he has returned to his adopted city of Bludhaven, using the small fortune Alfred left to him to start a foundation devoted to bettering social conditions in the city. Nightwing is riding high at the moment, and a new variant cover for Nightwing #87 celebrates that fact. The issue is written by Tom Taylor, with art by Bruno Redondo, colors by Adriano Lucas and letters by Wes Abbott.

The cover was revealed in a press release from DC Comics, which also informed readers that the issue will be one single, continuous image. The cover, by Jamal Campbell, shows Nightwing, shirtless and sprawled out on his bed, fast asleep, with Haley snuggled up on his chest. Nightwing has clearly just returned from his duties, as his outfit and batons are laid out on the floor next to him. Fans have turned out for this adorable cover, celebrating it on social media ahead of its release.

Jamal Campbell’s cover perfectly encapsulates two things that set Nightwing apart from so many other street heroes: his sex appeal and his humanity. Thirst posts about Nightwing’s rippling abs and chiseled butt are numerous across social media, to the point that his butt cheeks have canon nicknames within the DC Universe (Juan and Jim). Nightwing is more than a sex symbol, however, he is also one of the most compassionate and beloved heroes in the DC Universe. When Nightwing inherited Alfred’s money, he quickly created a foundation that would address the systemic issues leading to crime, rather than finance better gadgets and weapons. Nightwing’s rescue and adoption of Haley further reinforces his good nature. Superman and the other heroes of the DC Universe are right to put their trust in Nightwing, having watched him grow from a teen sidekick to a widely admired hero.

Since stepping out of Batman’s shadow, Nightwing has become not only a respected hero, but also a fan-favorite. Jamal Campbell’s variant cover is the ultimate fan service, showing off everything great about the character. Nightwing #87 is coming December 21.
