Hocus Pocus 2, the sequel to the hit Disney film from the '90s, has arrived, giving fans a chance to continue the story of the Sanderson sisters. But while the Hocus Pocus franchise is popular, another Disney Halloween movie from around the same time is arguably even more beloved: The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Known as one of the best holiday movies ever, The Nightmare Before Christmas gained a cult following for being a movie filled with exceptional characters, themes, and scoring. These memes perfectly sum up what fans love most about the best Halloween/Christmas crossover flick.

Beautifully Terrifying

Despite being released as a kids' movie, many people feel that The Nightmare Before Christmas is too scary for kids. And it's easy to see why.

Though it's not really violent, there are multiple scenes of dark, slightly disturbing imagery, most notably in the gruesome demise of Oogie Boogie. But it makes sense. The movie largely takes place in a town dedicated to Halloween. If there weren't creepy skeletons and witches jumping out at every corner or bug men getting dissolved in a vat of liquid, the town wouldn't be Halloween Town.

Like many movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas has a romantic subplot, here between Jack Skellington and Sally. And the two do a lot to prove why they're one of Disney's best couples.

Jack is largely oblivious to Sally's affections over the course of the movie, only really realizing his feelings after saving her and Santa from Oogie Boogie. The romantic subplot is part of what drives Sally throughout the movie, as she also tries to save Jack from himself and his foolish plans to take over Christmas. Though this subplot is somewhat slow compared to the main story, it's necessary for the plot.

A Tim Burton Movie

Due to the dark themes and tone of the movie, it comes as no surprise that this film came from the mind of Tim Burton. Burton's films tend to explore the creepy or dark corners of the human imagination, and The Nightmare Before Christmas is no exception.

The movie is full of dark, horrifying creatures and fantastical elements that keeps the movie light-hearted enough for kids. Burton continues to prove that he's one of the best filmmakers out there with his signature style of movie continuing long after this movie's release.

Over Exemplifies Holiday Spirits

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a somewhat underrated holiday movie gem, as it's a cult favorite that fans love to watch around both the Christmas and Halloween seasons, but it still flies under the radar for many people. Still, those that love it also enjoy debating whether it's a Halloween or a Christmas movie.

This meme exemplifies this by illustrating that, just like the citizens in Christmas Town and Halloweentown, there are those who count down the days until Christmas after November 1st and those who can't wait for the next Halloween to roll around in 364 more days.

Complex Characters With Faults

Complex characters are a key part of any great movie. And not only is Jack Skellington a complex character, but he also has many faults that he has to overcome.

Jack is so determined to take over Christmas and bring himself new excitement that he ignores the sound advice from others around him, particularly Sally. Jack overcomes this setback after his plans go horribly wrong, and he almost ruins everything. It's complex characters with faults like these that make The Nightmare Before Christmas a timeless classic and a great movie to watch.

Great Soundtrack

The Nightmare Before Christmas is clearly a musical, but it's filled with songs that are both talked about a lot and songs that fans don't talk enough about.

With classics everyone knows like "This is Halloween" to character development songs like "Jack's Lament" and "Sally's Song," the movie offers a variety of catchy, toe-tapping songs. Most if not all of these songs have a dark, gothic feel to them, but they fit the tone of the movie and show off the amazing skills of the film's composer, the legendary Danny Elfman.

It's A Holiday Movie

Though not a movie fully named after a holiday, The Nightmare Before Christmas clearly is a holiday movie, involving Jack Skellington trying to take over Christmas.

However, many fans still argue today about whether the movie is a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie. It contains the creepy, scary aspects of Halloween, but the heartwarming themes of Christmas. Overall, it's best to classify the movie as just a general holiday movie so that both sides can be right at the same time.

Jack Is His Own Worst Villain

Jack, obviously, means well in the movie, and there are certainly more evil characters hanging around Halloween Town, such as Oogie Boogie. But it's hard not to see that the worst villain in the movie may be Jack himself.

Throughout the film, Jack continues to go through with his plan to take over Christmas, despite Sally's warnings. He even goes as far as to kidnap Santa so that he can take his place, not to mention giving out murderous, dangerous toys in place of Santa's own. Jack is blinded by his desire to have something new in his life, and it's that desire that nearly makes him a true villain, though he eventually sees the error of his ways and helps to make things right.

Comparable To Hocus Pocus

The Nightmare Before Christmas was a smash spooky hit that only grew in popularity as time went on, much like another Disney Halloween-esque movie that came out the same year.

That movie, of course, was Hocus Pocus. And given the Halloween vibes both movies put out, it wasn't long before arguments began as to which movie was the superior Disney Halloween movie. It's a debate that rages on to this day, especially with the release of Hocus Pocus 2, and both sides have made valid points in defense of their chosen movie.

Unknown Ending Moral

Though the movie ends on a happy note, many are left wondering what the moral of the story is. Some think that the lesson is something along the lines of "stick with what you know" or "don't stray to try new things," - which is a poor message to the audience.

Others think that the message is something like "don't fly too high" when exploring new things. Whatever the case, the moral of the story is left up to the interpretation of the viewer, as it should be.
