The Night Eats The World plays like a zombie take on I Am Legend. Richard Matheson was a prolific author and screenwriter, penning such novels as The Incredible Shrinking Man and the short story that became Duel. His 1954 novel I Am Legend found protagonist Robert Neville as seemingly the last man alive in a world populated with vampires. The book is now considered a classic of the genre and focuses on Neville's mental and physical struggle to stay alive in a world where he might be the last of his kind.

I Am Legend has been adapted three times with 1964's The Last Man On Earth starring Vincent Price, 1971's The Omega Man with Charlton Heston and I Am Legend from 2007. The latter movie is easily the most well-known, but all three are loose adaptations of Matheson's work. George A. Romero later stated the book was a huge influence on 1968's Night Of The Living Dead, with its depiction of the vampire hordes attacking Neville's boarded-up house being reworked as zombies for the film.

The Night Eats The World is a 2018 French zombie movie from director Dominique Rocher where main character Sam (Anders Danielsen Lie) wakes up one morning to find Paris has been overrun by zombies. These undead creatures make no sound either, adding greatly to their creepiness. Sam finds himself essentially trapped within the apartment building alone, and soon has to raid other apartments for food and supplies.

The Night Eats The World finds Sam slowly losing his mind as the months pass with nobody to talk to. While the film has the fast zombie variety seen in the likes of World War Z and features some intense chases, its more of a slow-burn character study. Most zombie films focus on a short time frame, but this one takes a slower pace to examine the mental toll Sam's enforced isolation has on him.

That makes The Night Eats The World one of the most unique entries in the subgenre is recent years. It also feels like a zombie take on the I Am Legend novel, from charting the crushing isolation Sam deals with to a passage where he tries to tempt a stray cat into his building for company; this mirrors a chapter from the book where Neville does the same thing with a dog. For zombie fans who are a little bored with the genre The Night Eats The World is definitely worth a look, and Stephen King even sang the movie's praises on Twitter in 2018.
