Marsha Warfield could fill a sorely needed role in the 2023 Night Court reboot, if she returned to the character that first made her famous. Warfield joined the cast of the original classic courtroom comedy in Night Court season 4, playing the part of surly bailiff Rosalind "Roz" Russell. While Warfield has focused on her stand-up career in recent years, she spoke positively of the idea of a Night Court reboot when it was first announced in 2020 and recently wished the cast of the revival "all the best" via TikTok, raising the question of whether she might return as Roz in a cameo appearance.

The 2023 Night Court reboot has proven a hit for NBC, earning both critical acclaim and the highest ratings of any new show premiere in five years. However, the show also drew criticism for not acknowledging the original series beyond referencing the death of Judge Harry Stone and the presence of former prosecutor Dan Fielding. Warfield returning as Roz Russell would address these concerns, but could also potentially address another problem with the Night Court revival's ensemble.

New Night Court Needs A Foil Like Roz

Night Court Dan Fielding Beat Up With Roz Russell

One of the few complaints regarding the new Night Court is that the cast apart from Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) and newbie judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch) are underdeveloped and defined only by a few absurd character traits. The show also lacks a steady foil, who can be a steady presence person in the courtroom amid the chaotic excesses of the core cast. Marsha Warfield filled this role admirably in the original Night Court, offering reality checks along with snarky putdowns when things got crazy. It is easy to imagine Roz fulfilling this function once again in the Night Court reboot.

Roz's Story Deserves A Proper Ending

Marsha Warfield as Roz Russell in Night Court

While Marsha Warfield seems unlikely to return as Roz Russell for an extended stay, a cameo could resolve her story from the original Night Court. The classic series famously ended in confusion, with a series finale that left the final fates of most of the cast in question. Roz Russell was all but forgotten, however, amid the love triangle between Harry Stone, Dan Fielding and Christine Sullivan, Bull Shannon being abducted by aliens and Mac Robinson quitting law school to become a filmmaker. Roz barely had time to briefly show up and assure Harry that she wasn't leaving the court, having just bought five new pairs of handcuffs.

Despite this declaration of loyalty to her job, it seems unlikely that Roz Russell would still be on active duty by the time of the 2023 Night Court revival. It is entirely possible, however, that her character could pop in to check up on her old verbal sparring partner Dan Fielding and reveal what Roz is doing with herself in retirement. One interesting possibility is Roz revealing that she is a lesbian, matching with Marsha Warfield's own coming out from 2017. This would be a fitting end to Roz's story, give how many episodes of the original Night Court centered around her poor luck dating men.
