It’s been revealed that NieR series creator Yoko Taro won’t be directly writing the scenario for the upcoming NieR Re[in]carnation mobile game. The new game, coming to both Android and iOS, was announced during the NieR series’ 10th anniversary livestream last March 2020 alongside the NieR Replicant remaster.

Nier Re[in]carnaton is being made by Japanese development studio Applibot, who have worked on several mobile games for the Japan market. Both Nier:Automata main concept artist Kazuma Koda and character designer Akihiko Yoshida are also back to work on Re[in]carnation. Several weeks after its initial announcement, a gameplay trailer for the new title was released by Square Enix which showed off the game’s environments as well as a young girl that could be the game’s protagonist who is followed by what looks like a ghost.

Nier Re[in]carnation director Yoko Taro spoke to Famitsu, which was translated and reported by Siliconera, and said that the scenario of Re[in]carnation will be written by four different scenario writers. Yoko Taro will then take what the writers have worked on to create the game's overarching plot. The director also added that the young girl shown in the trailers may or may not be the Re[in]carnation’s protagonist as the game will feature several main characters.

During the interview with Famitsu, the game’s producer Yosuke Saito also added that when battles are included, the game will feel like it features way more than several main characters. Saito may be referring to the game’s “gacha” mechanics, which could feature a lot more characters beyond the game’s story. The interview also revealed that the tower and dungeons that will appear in the game will be called Cages while the ghost that was seen in the recent gameplay trailer is similar to the Grimoire Weiss or the pod from previous Nier games.

It’s good that Yoko Taro has decided to take a step back from writing the scenario for NieR Re[in]carnation as it may give him more time to focus on the remaster of NieR Replicant. Hopefully, the four scenario writers alongside Yoko Taro’s direction will be able to maintain the story and feel of the series in NieR Re[in]carnation. But fans of the series may have to wait a while before getting the chance to check out the game as no release date has been announced so far.
