NieR: Automata has achieved another impressive sales milestone, moving a whopping five million units since its launch in February 2017. Developer PlatinumGames and publisher Square Enix first released the action role-playing title on PC and PlayStation 4, before unleashing an Xbox One port in the summer of 2018.

Over the last several years, the NieR series as a whole has become quite the phenomenon, far removed from the cult classic status of NieR: Automata's predecessor, 2010's Nier. Book adaptations, a slew of dolls and figures, and an orchestra concert have seen the title explode outside of the medium. But make no mistake, NieR: Automata continuously contributes to the franchise's growth within gaming, too. Inarguably, NieR: Replicant, an updated version of the first game, wouldn't exist without PlatinumGames' admirable efforts in reviving the property and taking NieR: Automata from a cult classic to a well known hit.

According to the NieR Series' official Twitter page, NieR: Automata has reached even more heights. Since its launch over three years ago, the action-RPG has managed to sell more than fivemillion units worldwide digitally and at retail. This represents an especially incredible feat when considering the rate at which the title continues to sell. The most recent sales update prior to this came during Tokyo Game Show 2020 in September, revealing a total of 4.85 million copies sold. A relatively niche RPG shifting 150,000 units in a three-month span nearly four years after release is nothing if not impressive.

During a Tokyo Game Show stream, series producer Yosuke Saito teased, "I’m sure we’ll do something when we reach five million units." Whether or not that remains the case is not known just yet. As of writing, neither PlatinumGames nor Square Enix have revealed celebratory plans of any kind. There's sure to be time enough for it down the line, however, especially since another NieR release in Replicant is right around the corner. Although, it's worth noting that Square Enix tapped developer Toylogic for the remaster.

Meanwhile, PlatinumGames has its hands full with other projects. Babylon's Fall, another Square Enix-published title, is currently in production. Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya recently confirmed that, despite a lack of updates, development on Bayonetta 3 remains on track. Plus, Kamiya's next superhero game, tentatively titled Project G.G., just began picking up steam. When additional updates about any of these projects will emerge is anyone's guess for now, but this seems to be as good a time as any to join NieR: Automata's five million players for anyone who hasn't tried it yet.
