The release of Nier: Automata on Game Pass has caused fans to flock to the title's Steam page to review bomb it, citing the version's inferior quality when compared to the more recent port. Nier: Automata was a surprise hit when it first released in 2017, with director Yoko Taro quickly endearing his brand of off-beat writing and amalgamated RPG gameplay to Western fans. Today, Nier: Automata is often cited as one of the best modern JRPGs, and it remains highly recommended as a result.

Recently, Nier: Automata came to Game Pass as a port of the Nier: Automata Become as Gods Edition that originally launched on Xbox One. The port, which was worked on by developer QLOC, ended up adding a number of improvements to the game's quality. One of the biggest improvements the developer made was in giving Nier: Automata a borderless video setting on PC, which finally addressed an issue that still persists on the Steam version that sees the game launch into a fixed image setting regardless of resolution. For a platform like PC, this issue is especially glaring, and while it's been fixed by players, it has also remained a problem for four years.

Player frustration reached a boiling point when Nier: Automata on Game Pass released with the resolution issue fixed, on top of other ones like fixes to stuttering and crashes that have been peripheral annoyances in the Steam version. As reported by Game Spot, Steam users have begun review bombing the Nier: Automata page in an effort to either fix the Steam port or bring the much-improved Game Pass version to the platform. In the last three days alone, Nier: Automata has received over 500 negative reviews on Steam, and while its overall rating remains positive, the comments are pretty unified in the source of their concern: a need for a higher quality Nier: Automata PC port on Valve's service.

So far, players haven't been able to review bomb Nier: Automata to a negative aggregate score on Steam, which is a testament to the game's popularity even on that platform. Still, it's clear the PC issues that plagued the original Nier: Automata port are a sore spot for many, and players now feel like they've been ignored for years after the release of a far better port on Xbox Game Pass.

It's unclear whether the Nier: Automata review bombing will elicit any changes to the Steam version, and it doesn't seem likely that players will be able to actually drop the title's review average in a meaningful way. For now, it's simply become glaringly obvious that there is a best way to play Nier: Automata on PC, and it's one that many players feel should've arrived a lot sooner and on a different platform.
