Nicole Kidman is in talks to play former Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson in Annapurna’s Fair and Balanced, a forthcoming feature film about disgraced former Fox News head Roger Ailes. Kidman’s fellow Oscar-winner Charlize Theron has already signed on to play former Fox News and current NBC personality Megyn Kelly. Jay Roach (Trumbo) is set to direct the film from a script by Charles Randolph (The Big Short).

Fair and Balanced will cover the career of Roger Ailes as the one-time political consultant to presidents Nixon and Regan becomes CEO of conservative-leaning cable network Fox News, leading the network to ratings dominance only to later be forced out in the face of sexual harassment allegations. One-time Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson led the charge against Ailes, filing a sexual harassment suit against him in 2016. Dozens of other women came forward in the wake of Carlson’s suit to also accuse Ailes, forcing his resignation from Fox News. Ailes passed away in 2017.

Variety now reports that Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman is in talks to star in Annapurna's Fair and Balanced as Gretchen Carlson. Originally a correspondent and anchor for CBS News, Carlson moved to Fox News in 2005 to become the co-host of the channel’s popular morning show Fox & Friends. Carlson remained in that role until 2013 when she launched her own show The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson. She left the network in 2016 shortly before filing suit against Ailes.

Kidman has been nominated four times for Academy Awards, winning for Best Actress in 2003's The Hours. Last year Kidman won her first career Emmy award for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie for her role in HBO's acclaimed Big Little Lies. Kidman reportedly will reunite with Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley for the HBO miniseries The Undoing. Later in 2018, Kidman plays the mother of Arthur Curry in Warner Bros.' Aquaman (whose first trailer finally arrived during the recent San Diego Comic-Con). Kidman will also star opposite Lucas Hedges in director Joel Edgerton's drama Boy Erased. In addition, the actress is set to appear with Avengers: Infinity War star Sebastian Stan in director Karyn Kusama's crime drama Destroyer.

Fair and Balanced would mark the first time Oscar-winners Kidman and Theron have starred together in a film. With two such formidable actors in the leads and Roach at the helm, the movie is sure to be a hard-hitting look at Ailes' tenure at Fox News and the sexual harassment scandal that ultimately drove him out. Roach previously directed the Sarah Palin TV movie Game Change starring Julianne Moore as Palin, as well as the Lyndon Johnson biopic All the Way starring Bryan Cranston. So he knows his way around politically charged material.
