The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that just a few days after signing onto the 3D revenge film, Drive Angry, Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job) thriller, The Hungry Rabbit Jumps. Add this to Drive Angry and Cage's reported in-talks involvement with The Green Hornet, and the actor looks to have a busy time ahead of him.
Along with Donaldson directing, The Hungry Rabbit Jumps is written by Robert Tannen (Even Money), and will be produced by Tobey Maguire (through his Maguire Entertainment venture) and Jim Stern (through financier, Endgame). The film, which was picked up last year, sees Cage as a man whose wife is the victim of a brutal crime. The shattered husband then gets entangled with an underground vigilante organization to (I assume) get revenge on those responsible.
If revenge is the road the film goes down, then The Hungry Rabbit Jumps seems a bit too close to the mold of Cage's upcoming Drive Angry. It's not exact, but the general theme is similar. I'm guessing Cage's desire for this type of film was too much for just the one movie, hence why he's seeking out another so soon. Producer Stern also appears to have a desire for this type of a story - check out what he had to say about the project:
"As a company, we've been wanting to do a thriller for a long time... In the best of the Hitchcockian tradition, we've got a character who's offered the chance for vengeance and he finds himself in over his head."
Out of the two films - The Hungry Rabbit Jumps and Drive Angry - I think I'm looking forward to the latter slightly more, even if it's unnecessarily in 3D. Drive Angry seems like it has more potential to be exciting and thrilling (as a thriller should be), although that may change once we get closer to the two films' releases and start to see footage/learn more details about them. But count me as interested in both, for now.
What do you think of the latest project Cage has signed on for?
The Hungry Rabbit Jumps is set to start shooting next January in New Orleans, with no release date set as of yet.
