The trailer for upcoming horror comedy Mom and Dad casts Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair as parents who want to murder their kids. Cage has developed a reputation for playing crazy characters over the years, and also shown a willingness to take his performances completely over the top and chew on the scenery as if it was made of chocolate. While not everyone loves Cage's often wacky style, it's at least hard to accuse him of not being interesting.
Cage's latest effort is Mom and Dad, written and directed by Brian Taylor. Formerly part of the Neveldine/Taylor combo, Taylor's previous efforts include the Crank films, Gamer, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, on which he worked with Cage. He's also the mind behind Syfy's new series Happy!, which stars Christopher Meloni as a detective turned hitman who can see and interact with an imaginary cartoon horse after being revived from the dead. It's really no surprise that Taylor's own oddball sensibilities would gel well with Cage's outlandish tendencies.
The Mom and Dad trailer comes courtesy of Yahoo, with the film itself being distributed by Momentum Pictures. The concept of Mom and Dad is pretty simple. One day, a mysterious mass hysteria causes parents to begin killing their children. Nic Cage and co-star Selma Blair play lead couple Brent and Kendall Ryan, who lose their minds and embark on a quest to off their offspring. Now it's up to their kids Carly (Anne Winters) and Josh (Zackary Arthur) to team up and try to survive this parental punishment from hell.
While the trailer makes it clear that Mom and Dad is intended to be a comedic horror film, the comedy seems to be mostly of the pitch black variety, so those expecting a happy ending might want to look elsewhere. Kids are going to die in Mom and Dad, that much is obvious. The question is whether or not Cage and Blair's kids will be among the deceased. Both actors appear to be having a ball playing their filicidal characters, although Cage in particular looks like he's having a grand old time.
Interestingly enough, the premise of Mom and Dad is in some ways a flipped version of the 2014 horror comedy Cooties. In that film - which starred recognizable names like Elijah Wood, Alison Pill, and Rainn Wilson - a tainted batch of school lunch chicken nuggets causes anyone yet to go through puberty to try and murder their elders, which does lead to some child-on-parent killings. Of course, both plots owe a debt to prior "outbreak of mass violence" horror flicks like The Crazies and 28 Days Later, so it's doubtful one set out to emulate the other.
Mom and Dad attacks select theaters and VOD on January 19.
