Nickelodeon has been the starting point for many Hollywood actors. The stars of Nickelodeon shows receive attention at a very early age, and occasionally this attention can lead to both too much scrutiny, as well as too much praise. That within itself can cause major problems not only while young actors are working with the network, but also once they grow up and are no longer associated with it all.
Throughout the years, your favorite Nickelodeon kid stars have dealt with their fair share of issues. Some have dealt with abuse, while others have simply jumped off the deep end due to stress or other problems. Additionally, a few have had some major financial issues, while others have dealt with drug controversies.
Needless to say, just because you're a Nickelodeon star doesn't mean that your life is perfect and you don't have your fair share of problems. Sometimes, the world isn't as pretty as it might seem on television.
Regardless of whether you think a television star should have it all, these kids are still human beings. Thus growing up in front of the camera can have many negative impacts when it comes to their adulthood. Not only that, but it can make their actual childhood pretty controversial too.
Here are the 15 Dark Facts You Never Knew About Nickelodeon Kid Stars.
15 Child Protect Services Was Called to the Set of All That
Angelique Bates was a regular on the Nickelodeon sketch show All That before she was replaced by Amanda Bynes. As an original cast member, Bates was in numerous skits and an essential part of the show.
When interviewed in 2016, Bates claims that she "was physically, emotionally, mentally abused in front of the producers and cast members" by a family member while on the set of All That. Apparently, Child Protective Services was even called to the set in 1996, though producers convinced her to not say anything.
Nothing was ever done to help Bates. Her abuse was a known by most on set, but no one spoke up about it due to worries of it causing unwanted controversy. She rarely spoke of her abusive childhood for most of her life, but she's been more open about it in recent years.
14 Dora's Voice Actor Got Caught in a Lawsuit
Fátima Ptacek is the teenage voice behind the very well known character Dora from Dora the Explorer. Besides being the voice behind the explorer of the world who also has a talking backpack, Ptacek has had a pretty normal childhood. She went to high school, just like everyone else her age. However, it was there that she got into some trouble.
Ptacek was accused of "peer-pressuring" another student at the school into vaping with her on school property. When another student told on them to school officials, Ptacek received a three day suspension while the other student was expelled.
The parents of the expelled student filed a lawsuit against the school after the incident. They claimed that both girls confessed to the same crime, but that Ptacek was given a lesser punishment due to her celebrity status.
13 Jamie Lynn Spears' Teen Pregnancy Almost Become a Legal Nightmare
Everyone knows that Jamie Lynn Spears was an up and coming star on Nickelodeon when she announced that she was pregnant at 16 years old. For many kids, it meant the end of one of their favorite Nickelodeon shows, Zoey 101, which was cancelled after Spears' announcement.
What many don't realize is that the situation was almost a lot worse. Jamie Lynn Spears met the father of her daughter, Casey Aldridge, at church. He was 18 years old at the time of Spears' pregnancy. Once Spears announced that she was pregnant, the father almost had to deal with a statutory rape sentence due to him being two years older than Spears, who was a minor at the time.
Aldridge ended up pleading to a misdemeanor under Louisiana law. He avoided a statutory rape sentence due to two things: He didn't reside in California where Spears would live while filming her show. Plus, he was actually a little less than two years older than Spears, missing that cutoff by a small amount of time.
12 Christopher Massey Got a Restraining Order Against Shar Jackson
Christopher Massey was a supporting character on Jamie Lynn Spears' show. He portrayed one of Zoey's friends at boarding school. In real life, Christopher Massey is the brother of Kyle Massey who was a Disney channel darling himself when starring on That's So Raven.
Shar Jackson is also an actress. She is the former ex-girlfriend of Kevin Federline and the two share two kids together. Kevin Federline then married Britney Spears and had two kids with her. Britney Spears' little sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, was on a show with Christopher Massey. Christopher Massey ended up getting together with Shar Jackson's daughter, Cassilay Jackson. Now, Cassilay Jackson and Christopher Massey have a daughter together. Got that?
This past summer, Massey requested a restraining order against Shar Jackson after he accused her of hitting his daughter and leaving a razor-cut on her face. According to Massey, when he confronted Shar Jackson about what had happened, she responded that she would and could "do whatever she wants."
The judge approved Massey's restraining order request, though Shar Jackson denies it all, calling Massey a "very troubled individual."
11 Nick Cannon and Eminem Regularly Fought About Mariah Carey
Nick Cannon was a later edition to the Nickelodeon's All That. He's probably one of Nickelodeon's most successful actors, becoming a success even after moving on from the children's network. He's been in movies such as Drumline and Love Don't Cost a Thing. He also started his own show called Wild n Out and he used to be the host of America's Got Talent.
You might also know Cannon for his marriage to Mariah Carey. With Carey being much older than Cannon, the two regularly made headlines. That being said, Cannon was also having issues with rapper, Eminem, at the time.
Nick Cannon and Eminem spent years arguing through song about Cannon's wife. Eminem would include not so nice lyrics about Mariah Carey in his songs and Cannon wasn't having it. At one point, Cannon challenged Eminem to a $100,000 rap battle. It got that serious (and that ridiculous).
10 JoJo Siwa Has Continuously Bullied About Her Weight
JoJo Siwa is probably best known for appearing on the show Dance Moms and for being a YouTube sensation. She's sassy and full of life. That's why Nickelodeon gave her a special called JoJo Siwa: My World.
Even though it might seem like the young starlet has it all, she's had a difficult road. In fact, Siwa has been relentlessly bullied for her looks. Specifically, she's been harassed online about her weight. This has been going on since she was only twelve years old.
In an interview once, Siwa came out and said, "What I do experience is social media and so every day people comment, 'You're fat, you're ugly, you're rude, you're all this stuff.'" She continued by saying, "I just don’t like it at all."
It doesn't seem to matter too much, though, because Siwa appears to be powering through it all.
9 Drake Bell Went Bankrupt After Drake and Josh
Drake Bell has been in the news lately for his hissey fit over not being invited to Josh Peck's wedding. Unfortunately, it's not the first time that he has made headlines since graduating from the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh.
In 2014, Drake Bell went bankrupt after claiming that his expenses were only about $3,000 a month when they were actually almost $19,000 a month. At the time, he was only 26 years old. While he made a lot while working on Drake and Josh, he went through a whole year afterwards where he only made a little less than $15,000 in an entire year, so you can do the math there.
Bell went bankrupt since he owed a lot in taxes. He was crippling in debt. Bell has also dealt with the law in other ways-- he's had two DUI convictions and was even sentenced to 96 hours in prison, though he was released early due to overcrowding.
8 Matthew Underwood Has Had Some Major Drug Possession Problems
Yet another Zoey 101 star who has had some trouble post Nickelodeon, Matthew Underwood has had his fair share of issues with the law. Since his time regularly acting as a kid, Underwood has repeatedly been arrested for drug possession and for violating probation.
Underwood was once found in a bathroom with a 17 year old girl while the two were smoking cannabis. His major issue here was the fact that he was contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which he was arrested for.
After the arrest, Underwood violated probation a total of five times, yet avoided jail time when a judge threw his case out. This was after Underwood's probation officer suggested that Underwood should go behind bars for half a year.
Thankfully, even though Underwood should have gone under some major punishments, he seems to be doing okay. He even saved a life after finding a baby with two parents who had overdosed in their car.
7 James Maslow Was Bullied So Much That He Had To Switch Schools
Big Time Rush was all the rage back in the day. The band had their own show on Nickelodeon that went by the same name. James Maslow was one of the band members and did pretty well while on the show and in the band.
Before he became the member of a boy band with his own television show, however, Maslow was relentlessly bullied at school. He was called "pudgy" by a lot of fellow students and didn't have many friends that he could turn to for support, making it an incredibly dark time for him.
The bullying got so bad that Maslow ended up having to change schools. Maslow gets the last laugh, though, because he obviously became incredibly successful. All those kids who used to make fun of him probably wish they hadn't.
6 Amanda Bynes Started a Fire in Front of a Stranger’s House and Her Dog Was Found Covered in Gasoline
Amanda Bynes has gotten into a lot of trouble the past few years. She went from being a Nickelodeon sweetheart to having a full-blown meltdown that led to being held for 72 hours in a mental health facility. The actress has obviously had her fair share of problems.
Having starred on All That and her own show, The Amanda Show, on Nickelodeon, Bynes was set to have a fantastic career in Hollywood. She was in many movies, starring opposite Emma Stone, Channing Tatum, and John Travolta. She was doing great... until it all went downhill.
Bynes ended up setting a stranger's front yard on fire. It's not like she was trying to do harm, though. She even unknowingly dowsed her dog in gasoline. It was just a horribly sad situation all together, as the actress had obviously veered into a full-forced mental breakdown.
Thankfully, she seems to be doing better after handling her problems. She has stated that she's quit acting for good and is now focused on becoming a fashion designer.
5 Ryan Rottman Was Charged With A DUI After Clubbing with Zac Efron and Rumer Willis
Ryan Rottman was on a TeenNick show called Gigantic, though he is more known for his roles in 90210 and The House Bunny, starring opposite Emma Stone and Anna Faris.
In 2011, Rottman was out clubbing with Zac Effron and Rumer Willis. He ended up leaving the club completely inebriated. While driving home, he jumped a curb, which was when cops spotted him. After giving Rottman a breathalyzer test, the police arrested him due to the fact that he blew a .19, which is twice the legal limit.
Rottman was charged with a DUI, but took a reduced plea which ended up being "alcohol-related misdemeanor reckless driving"-- whatever that means.
4 Revealing Pictures Were Leaked Of Jennette McCurdy
Jennette McCurdy is best known for her role as Sam on iCarly. She also dated NBA star Andre Drummond for a little less than a minute.
In 2014, almost-nude pictures of McCurdy were leaked online. She then insinuated that her ex-boyfriend, Drummond, was the one responsible for the leak. Drummond denied being part of it, but nevertheless, the fact remained that private pictures of McCurdy had been leaked online without her permission.
After the leak, McCurdy went on a podcast and discussed how horrible her relationship was with Drummond. She made fun of him and even went so far as to say that he was a bad kisser. She obviously believes that he's the one who leaked the pictures and isn't too happy about it.
3 Keke Palmer Was Sexually Abused By A Family Member
Before she became part of the Scream Queens franchise and stared in the Grease Live!, Keke Palmer was a major Nickelodeon child star. From 2008 through 2011, Palmer was the star of her very own Nickelodeon show called True Jackson, VP.
Before Palmer became a Hollywood star, she actually had a somewhat troubled past. Palmer is actually a sexual assault survivor. During an interview on The Wendy Williams Show, Palmer revealed that she was molested by a family member when she was only five years old.
What's unfortunate is that Palmer still speaks to this relative to this day. While she claims that her mother is sad about the whole thing, Palmer is more direct. She describes it more as something that happened and that she's since moved on from, rather than as a traumatic event that has haunted her all of her life.
2 Emma Robert Was Arrested For Harming Evan Peters
Another Scream Queens star, Emma Roberts is best known for her roles in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story. Before all of that, though, Roberts had her own show on Nickelodeon back in the day called Unfabulous. She's also the niece of acclaimed actress Julia Roberts.
In 2013, Roberts was arrested while in Montréal for assaulting on again/off again significant other Evan Peters. Peters was found with a bloody nose and bite marks. That being said, Roberts had multiple bruises as well. However, Peters didn't want to press any charges against Roberts and that was that.
The two went their separate ways after that, but then got back together a bit later. The two are known around Hollywood for loving each other greatly, but not for being the most stable couple.
1 Ricardo Medina Jr. Killed His Roommate
Ricardo Medina Jr. was part of the Nickelodeon show Power Rangers Samurai in 2011. He was also in Power Rangers Wild Force in 2002, so being part of the Power Rangers squad was kind of his thing.
In 2015, Medina was arrested after stabbing his roommate Joshua Sutter to death with a medieval sword. He claimed he only did it out of self-defense. Nevertheless, he was arrested on murder charges.
The murder charges were later dropped, however, but then other charges were brought up against him in 2016 dealing, once again, with Sutter's death. Medina ended up pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to six years in prison, which is the maximum sentence for this kind of charge.
