In Marvel’s Secret Invasion, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) needs to avoid repeating the same mistake he made in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In the 2014 MCU movie, Nick Fury’s story revolved around the rise of HYDRA from within SHIELD. SHIELD was ultimately brought down by Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), who implemented a plan to use SHIELD’s Helicarriers to take over the world.

Nick Fury will be back in Phase 4 for his own MCU project. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role alongside Ben Mendelsohn as Talos in Secret Invasion, a new show coming to Disney+. The series will presumably play off a post-credits tease in Spider-Man: Far from Home that revealed Nick Fury is now working with Captain Marvel’s Talos in the present day. It would seem that the two are now associated with SWORD, a peacekeeping organization initially established in Marvel Comics, that was set up to deal with the likes of extraterrestrial threats. The confirmation that the two characters will be leading Secret Invasion implies that they’ll be going against Talos’ own people, the Skrulls. The comic book version of the story focused on the heroes of the Marvel Universe having to fight off an invasive army of the shape-shifting Skrulls.

It appears that Nick Fury’s next MCU mission will be to unravel a Skrull plot to infiltrate the planet. That’s essentially a larger-scale version of the goal he tried (and failed) to accomplish in Captain America: Winter Soldier. It was said in the movie that Nick Fury found out that HYDRA was inside SHIELD. That was why he faked his death and attempted to deliver a warning to Captain America (Chris Evans). Admittedly, his efforts did help the main characters succeed in beating HYDRA at the end of the film, but Fury wasn’t successful in thwarting HYDRA’s takeover. It’s true that he discovered their plan, but despite all the resources he had available to him as the director of SHIELD, he made the revelation a little too late.

Secret Invasion Initiative

His failure to stop what happened in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a mistake that may actually help him in Phase 4. Understanding what he did wrong and pondering over what he should have done differently can put Nick Fury on the path to making better choices the next time this situation occurs. And the premise of Secret Invasion proves it will happen again. HYDRA operatives did an excellent job of hiding in plain sight prior to The Winter Soldier, and that’s not at all unlike what the Skrulls will be doing in Phase 4.

Hopefully, his experiences with HYDRA will help Fury identify the Skrull imposters before the invasion goes too far. Fury couldn’t defeat HYDRA in time in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but if he takes enough preemptive measures, he can succeed in rooting out the Skrull Empire’s spies and preventing a much greater disaster in Secret Invasion. Due to his vast connections, his previous history with the Skrulls, and his skill in espionage, Nick Fury can be the Earth’s best asset against them.
