15 ‘Nice’ Celebrities Who Are Secretly Jerks

Whether you’re simply not a morning person or you’re just having a rough day, pretty much everyone is prone to coming off as a jerk at least a few times throughout their life. Unfortunately, when you’re a celebrity, your misconducts can often find their way onto the nightly news for the entire world to see. Almost every celebrity worth mentioning has found themselves the subject of some negative press at least once during their career. However, there are also a number of celebrity names that pop up far too often in a negative context, making you think that these particular stars may be in need of a serious attitude adjustment.

There are plenty of celebrities out there that everyone would universally agree are jerks. For instance, Kanye West has repeatedly insulted fellow musicians and even his own fans for not praising him enough, while Shia LaBeouf has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement that have not ended well for the actor.

But then there are other celebrities that still manage to win audiences over with their seemingly kind-hearted performances in front of the camera, only to have co-stars and interviewers report a totally different take on the performer's personality off screen.

Here are 15 ‘Nice’ Celebrities Who Are Secretly Jerks.

15 Jennifer Lawrence

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer 1 - Jennifer Lawrence

When Jennifer Lawrence first came on the scene, she not only won audiences over with her amazing acting chops in films like Winter’s Bone and X-Men: First Class, but with her quirky and free-spirited persona that she showed off during interviews and awards ceremonies. However, recently, the public perception on the actress has suddenly switched gears, with Lawrence beginning to rub viewers the wrong way with her off camera antics.

Early last year, the actress mocked a foreign journalist at a press conference for being on his phone, when the man was reportedly using it to help him translate his questions. But instead of picking up on his thick accent and broken English, Lawrence continued to lay into the man, calling him “bro” while wagging her finger in his direction and mocking him for his inaccuracies.

Lawrence also drew fire for a story she recapped on The Graham Norton Show, where the actress admitted to scratching her butt on some sacred Hawaiian rocks, resulting in a minor landslide that almost injured a crew member.

14 Edward Norton

Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk

Edward Norton has turned in some truly captivating performances in his last 23 years, playing everything from a Neo-Nazi to The Incredible Hulk -- but as it turns out, that doesn’t mean the actor is always the most pleasant person to work with.

Norton is notorious for making crazy on set demands that often involved him stepping on the writer’s and director’s toes. When he starred in Reg Dragon opposite Anthony Hopkins, Norton reportedly rewrote multiple pages of the script and brought them to set, demanding that they be filmed. On American History X, Norton clashed with the crew again, demanding that he get to assemble a final cut of the film after believing the director’s version was simply inadequate.

Then there was The Incredible Hulk, where Norton was apparently so demanding with the story that Marvel and the actor decided to part ways, with Mark Ruffalo taking over the role ever since.

13 Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon in Penelope

There are few things worse than when a celebrity pulls the “Do you know who I am?” card in order to try and threaten their way out a sticky situation -- which is exactly what Reese Witherspoon did when she found herself in an altercation with the cops.

After Witherspoon and her husband were pulled over and suspected of drunk driving, the actress failed to adhere to the officer’s simple instructions of remaining in the vehicle. She also lied about being pregnant at the time of the traffic stop (which makes her look doubly worse for being drunk) and tried to say that she could do whatever she wanted simply because she was an America citizen.

Though the actress has since apologized for her immature antics, it’s hard to let slide the fact that both Witherspoon and her husband thought it was okay to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

12 Miles Teller

With only a handful of hit movies under his belt, you would think it would be too soon for the celebrity status to go to Miles Teller’s head, but already, the 30-year-old actor has rubbed co-worker and reporters the wrong way for his self-important persona.

While working on the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, Teller and director Josh Trank did allegedly not get along, with reports that the two almost came to blows while filming. While asked about the issue, Teller did not outright deny the claim but said that whatever happens on a movie set can be too personal to discuss with the public.

Furthermore, the actor had a controversial interview with Anna Peele from Esquire, where the actor allegedly requested that Peele cut up his meat for him while the two were sharing a meal. Understandably, the journalist did not shine the kindest light upon Teller in her profile, calling him “kind of a d***.”

11 Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez in The Boy Next Door

While Jennifer Lopez is best known for her successful singing career and playing strong-willed and independent women in both romantic comedies and dramatic films, the actress is reportedly far from self-reliant when it comes to actually working on set.

Lopez has gained a bad reputation over the years as being a bit of a diva and making ridiculous on set demands. Back in 2001, the actress reportedly required nine dressing rooms to accommodate her and her staff in exchange for giving an interview to the BBC. And when it comes to her hotel stays or her location trailers, Lopez has been said to give multiple pages of all the amenities she requires in order to complete the work. She reportedly even demanded an extra large decked out trailer to appear in just a few seconds of a charity ad made to help AIDS victims, which doesn’t seem very charitable of Lopez at all.

10 Mike Myers

Mike Myers in Wayne's World

With characters such as Wayne Campbell and Austin Powers, Canadian funnyman Mike Myers seems like he’d be an absolute riot in real life. But reportedly, Myers has no time for joking around when the cameras aren’t rolling.

Myers former co-star, Amy Hill, reported that the actor was a nightmare to work with on The Cat in the Hat by arriving late on set and alienating himself from the cast and crew. He was even said to have constantly been battling the director, and that he even had a personal assistant specifically designated to bringing him chocolates whenever he insisted.

In his own defense, Myers admitted in an interview with Marc Maron that when it comes to movies of his own creation, he can indeed be defensive of his ideas and that he is willing to walk away from a project if anyone tries to alter his vision. But despite numerous reports, Myers maintains that he has never intentionally attacked anyone.

9 Zooey Deschanel

Much like Mike Myers, many of the alleged issues that surround Zooey Deschanel come from her being a so-called control freak. So whether that behavior can be classified as a full-blown jerkdom, or simply someone trying to maintain creative control over their career, depends on what you think is acceptable behavior in the workplace.

A production insider on Deschanel’s hit Fox sitcom New Girl reported that the actress/ producer is prone to throwing temper tantrums when the filming runs behind schedule, resulting in on-set rules that benefit Deschanel’s shooting schedule over the other actors. The comedic actress has also been known to be dismissive of fans by shuffling past them at red carpet events, while she has also been captured being rude to reporters by subtly mocking their interview style.

8 Jason Biggs

Jason Biggs rumored for Spider-Man (2017)

While Jason Biggs become known for playing the socially awkward and harmless love interest in films like Saving Silverman and the American Pie trilogy, in real life the actor has proven time and time again that he’s not afraid to offend anyone through his Twitter account. The comedic actor has made headlines on multiple occasions for tweeting out sexist jokes at the wives of Republican politicians and the female contestants of The Bachelor. And while most people love a good joke that lampoons those who come across as self-centered and disingenuous, many of Biggs' tweets proved to be far more hateful than they were funny.

But what really got Biggs into hot water was his tweet following the crash of the Malaysia Airlines plane that was shot down over Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of the 298 people that were onboard. Biggs immediately sent out “Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?” resulting in an extreme backlash on Twitter, losing Biggs a large number of followers in the process.

7 Lea Michele

Lea Michelle in Glee

No matter how many awards she wins or hit TV series she stars in, Lea Michele can’t help but rub some people the wrong way. While the actress/singer does get an unruly amount of negative press simply because some people find her superficial and shrill, Michele has allegedly been a legitimate problem to a number of her Glee co-workers.

While Michele has gone on record denying various rumors that she’s feuded with co-stars or turned into a demanding diva, multiple stories have popped up about Michele being rude on set, including snapping her fingers at crew members when they're holding up shooting, as well as not getting along with guest star Kate Hudson and series regular Naya Rivera.

Allegedly, things got so heated between Michele and her co-star that there was an onset altercation that resulted in Rivera’s early departure from the series. Rivera would later tear into Michele in her 2016 tell-all book, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up.

6 Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase in Community

Before the hit NBC sitcom Community revitalized his career, former Saturday Night Live funnyman Chevy Chase’s career was beginning to fade into obscurity, which may have been a result of the actor being notoriously difficult to work with. While Chase was best known for playing lovable dimwits in some of the biggest comedies of the ’80s and ’90s, the actor has been reportedly everything but funny to many of his former co-workers.

Back on the 1990s, Chase became banned from hosting SNL after he supposedly slapped female cast member Cheri Oteri in the back of the head. Will Ferrell ended up reporting the incident to Lorne Michaels, which resulted in Chase’s permanent separation from the show.  He’s also said to have reeked havoc on the set of Community by using racial slurs and repeatedly fighting with Dan Harmon, the series creator.

5 Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl in Knocked Up

Over the last decade, Katherine Heigl has slowly been developing a reputation as someone who's extremely difficult to work with.

The actress first raised eyebrows when she referred to Knocked Up as a “sexist” film and alluded that writer/director Judd Apatow was only interested in making his male characters likable. Although Knocked Up may indeed be made from a man’s perspective, Apatow certainly does a better job at developing his female characters more than most male writers working today, not to mention that one of the underlying themes of the film is that the male protagonist needs to learn how to grow up.

Heigl also suffered a messy split from her hit ABC series Grey’s Anatomy, when the actress reportedly did not show up for work one day and was released from her contract as part of an ongoing disagreement with series creator Shonda Rhimes.

Others have also reported that Heigl’s mother, who is also her manager, can be just as demanding as her daughter to work with.

4 Jared Leto

Jared Leto in Blade Runner 2049

Jared Leto is known for tackling intense and often eccentric characters that have helped shine a light on the struggles of drug addiction and being transgender, as seen in his performances in Requiem for a Dream, Lord of War, and Dallas Buyers Club. While these films have no doubt left a positive impact on those grappling with the same kind of experiences, the actor’s need to fully inhabit his characters has taken a toll on many of his co-stars.

Leto most notably made headlines during his turn as The Joker in last year’s Suicide Squad, where the actor refused to break character between takes, insisting that no one call him by his real name while also sending his co-stars a long list of extremely bizarre gifts throughout production, including a live rat, a dead pig, and various adult toys.

While some can dismiss these antics as "The Joker’s doing," Leto has also been reportedly brash during interviews, storming out when asked about his earlier acting gigs and shouting obscenities at reporters.

3 Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande in Scream Queens season 1, episode 7 Beware of Young Girls

Even at the young age of 24, Ariana Grande’s accomplishments and impressive singing talents cannot be denied. Grande is even extremely charming during most interviewers, coming off as a carefree and extremely down-to-earth celebrity. But all of this can’t excuse the notorious incident that took place when the singer visited a doughnut shop just a few years back.

In a video that made news headlines, Grande can be seen being snobby with the staff, stating that she needs a “doughnut professional” and later dropping the F-bomb on the worker and blatantly stating that she “hates America.” What’s even worse is that Grande and her boyfriend can be seen licking and possibly spitting on the donuts without buying them!

The manager later stated that those doughnuts very well might have been sold later in the day to an unsuspecting customer, which is downright disgusting.

2 Jonah Hill

Jonah Hill in Moneyball

Ever since Jonah Hill received an Academy Award nomination for his work in the 2012 drama Moneyball, the 33-year-old actor’s sense of humor seems like it’s been on the decline. While it is indeed a challenge to jump from raunchy comedies to more serious film work, Hill has repeatedly lashed out at those who haven’t taken his transition quite as seriously as he has.

During a Rolling Stone interview with his This is the End co-stars Seth Rogen, James Franco and Danny McBride, Hill refused to answer a number of the interviewers sillier questions, telling him, “I’m not answering that dumb question! I’m not that kind of person! Being in a funny movie doesn’t make me have to answer dumb questions.” Hill also shut down the question asking about his workout routine, saying that it’s “of little relevance.”

Even director Judd Apatow has been on record calling Hill “angry,” which might explain why the two haven’t worked together since 2009’s Funny People.

1 Gwyneth Paltrow

Pepper Potts Gwenyth Paltrow Iron Man

The reason that most actors seem so down-to-earth is likely because many grew up living seemingly average lives, where they had to rely on handwork and talent to achieve any kind of success.

However, Gwyneth Paltrow was actually brought up in a show-biz family where she attended various private schools and spent part of her teenage years traveling to Europe. While this doesn’t diminish from her many talented performances, it does shed a light on the actress’s propensity to come off as extremely pretentious and overly privileged.

In fact, there are entire web pages designated to breaking down the actress’s more outlandish statements that prove how out of touch Paltrow is with the average American, including the time she said being an actress was harder than being a mother and working a regular job, or that she “would rather die than let me kid eat Cup-a-Soup,” and that “I am who I am. I can’t pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year.” The list goes on and on.

So do you think these celebrities have acted like jerks in the past? Or are they simply misunderstood? Sound off in the comments!
