In Amazon Games' new MMO, New World, resources and gear are key to success. Luckily, there are a variety of trade skills designed to allow players to get their hands on both. Whether players are looking to craft their own gear or gather materials that are in high demand for other tradesmen, trades are the best way to stay ahead of the curve.

Having access to the money and equipment that trades can provide is vital to any MMO, and New World's faction system makes it so a player's ability to gather and refine resources also has implications for their entire faction. There are 17 trade skills in New World, though, and players can level up every single one if they choose to.

With so many options, it can be difficult to tell which trades in New World players should level up first. There are trades that are more useful than others at the beginning of a new game and that can serve a variety of aims for those players who want flexibility as they level up.

Best Trades to Level Up First in New World

While leveling a new character in New World, it is advisable to level up a quality mix of both Gathering and Refining trades. Both are present on this list, and it is recommended that players level up all of them as soon as possible:

  • Gathering Skills
  • Stonecutting
  • Cooking
  • Engineering

Gathering Skills

Mining, Logging, Harvesting, and Tracking/Skinning are all essential skills for every player to level up no matter what kind of character they are attempting to create. Regardless of whether they are looking to level up one of the Crafting skills, players will all need a source of income, preferably without scamming their New World faction, as they progress through the game. These trades will serve that purpose and provide flexibility to allow players to level up other, more complex trades later.

Players may notice that Fishing in New World was not included in this section, and that is because it is a bit more of a grind than other Gathering skills, so the cost/benefit tradeoff isn't as desirable. Leveling up fishing can be beneficial, but it is not essential in the early game.

Stonecutting

While Refining skills aren't typically a point of emphasis when leveling, because they often get improved while leveling the trades that make them useful, Stonecutting has a unique value that makes it more substantial. The ability to craft tuning orbs that allow repeat entrance into dungeons, and cut gems that are used to upgrade gear sets Stonecutting apart and makes it a must-have pick.

Cooking

Food is extremely important in most MMOs, and New World is no different. Cooking will keep players supplied with food, and it is the easiest Crafting skill to level. The other Crafting skills can typically wait until later in the game, as they take much longer to progress and can create a bit of a detour if they become a player's focus too early on.

Engineering

As mentioned, Crafting skills are best left for high-level characters who don't have much else to focus on, with the exception of Cooking. Engineering can also be an exception, but only for players planning to primarily use a bow or musket in New World, and only up to level 50. This is because getting Engineering to level 50 doesn't take long, and it will ensure that ranged players can stay supplied with passable ammo. Players won't be able to make great ammo at this level, but it's good enough for the early- to mid-game, so players will not have to worry about running out completely.
