This article contains spoilers for X Deaths of Wolverine #2.

The X-Men comics have introduced a new rogue Wolverine - a ruthless new enemy who could threaten the entire world in Marvel Comics. The last few years have seen the X-Men comics transformed, with the entire mutant race gathering on the living island of Krakoa. But the age of mutantkind is currently challenged by its greatest threat - with Russian agents currently working to rewrite history by killing Professor X long before he could form the X-Men.

The X-Men are focused on the past, attempting to preserve the timeline, but they're unaware of other crises in the present day. The secret mutant Moira MacTaggert was exposed by Mystique, her powers nullified by forbidden technology once developed by Forge during the Inferno event. Now, X Deaths of Wolverine, by Benjamin Percy and Federico Vicentini, is telling the story of her desperate flight - and an unexpected pursuer, when she discovers she's being hunted by a rogue version of Wolverine.

This Wolverine is a truly dangerous opponent, absorbed into the Phalanx. Jonathan Hickman's Powers of X miniseries, which relaunched the current line of X-Men comics back in 2019, redefined the Phalanx. It revealed they are the greatest techno-organic society, existing only to expand their own intelligence by consuming lesser societies. Moira MacTaggert encountered the Phalanx in some of her previous lives, and consequently she is probably the only one to realize the true scale of this threat. The rogue Wolverine is hunting her - but once he has killed her, he will potentially go on to claim the entire world.

It's reasonable to assume it is no coincidence the Phalanx are hunting for Moira MacTaggert; somehow they had survived the destruction of her previous timelines, presumably because they dwell within black holes - realms that exist outside normal spacetime. Moira's past has come back to haunt her - but they stand for Earth's future. Fortunately, the X-Men now have precogs such as Destiny, and Destiny is already sensing the presence of this rogue Wolverine.

According to Powers of X, there are only two things the ultimate techno-organic Dominion fear; Galactus and the Phoenix Force. The X-Men have always been strongly associated with the Phoenix Force, and teasers for the upcoming Destiny of X event have hinted the Phoenix is soon to become central to their stories once again. It looks as though Moira MacTaggert and this rogue Wolverine are about to trigger a conflict on a galactic scale, one beyond anything even the X-Men have experienced before.
