CD Projekt Red's newly released teaser image suggests that the upcoming Witcher game could be focusing on a new Witcher school not yet seen in the franchise, called the Lynx School. While the teaser image does not reveal much, it shows a new kind of Witcher medallion, which has been confirmed by CDPR as a Lynx medallion following speculation by fans. The Lynx School is a completely new addition to the lore of The Witcher, meaning there is little that is currently known about it.

Since the announcement of a new game, fans of The Witcher franchise have been readily debating what this upcoming new saga could entail based on this teased medallion. A popular theory is that the new Witcher game will abandon Geralt as the protagonist as it has been confirmed it will not be titled The Witcher 4. There had also been speculation that the medallion may have been of a different animal, such as a wolf, but the aforementioned confirmation by CDPR intimates that the new game will have a focus on the School of the Lynx.

The new Witcher game will likely leave Geralt and his School of the Wolf behind as it progresses with the Lynx School which, at present, only exists in fan-made literature. The Witcher Fanon wiki's own lore states that the Lynx School is an off-shoot of the School of the Cat, reformed by Geralt's friend Lambert and his sorceress-lover, Kiera Metz, some years after the events of The Witcher 3. Since the lynx-like shape of the new medallion has been confirmed, it seems that the new Witcher saga will indeed focus upon this new school not yet explored within Witcher canon media. However, this fanon material is highly unlikely to inform CDPR's approach in the next Witcher game due to it being a fan project with no ties to the company.

The New Witcher Game Features The Lynx School

witcher game lynx medallion confirmed

The Witcher medallion featured in CD Projekt Red's teaser image boasts obviously feline characteristics, including tall, pointed ears and long whiskers. Yet, it does not match the appearance of the medallion belonging to The Witcher's School of the Cat. It had been theorized that the new Witcher saga could revolve around the Cat School, which is canon throughout Witcher media and has close ties to Ciri, who many have speculated could be the protagonist of the new game. In the books, Ciri claimed a Cat medallion for herself from a Witcher mercenary that was ordered to kill her, and the games reference this by the UI when playing as Ciri feature a xat-shape instead of Geralt's wolf medallion in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Even though the teaser image has been confirmed to feature a Lynx medallion, it is possible that the Cats and Ciri's connection thereto will feature in the new Witcher game. Within canon material, including the Zdrada comic, the Cats are an infamous Witcher School that gains a proclivity for murder and assassination due to a failed mutagen. The Cats have a fierce rivalry with the Wolves stemming from their violent history, despite Geralt being able to obtain the Cat School gear in Witcher 3. Nevertheless, it is possible that the new Witcher game could see the infamous Cats evolving into a more tame Lynx, similar to as told in the fan-fiction, or perhaps an alternative new tie between the two feline Schools. Due to Ciri's established ties to the Cat School (which is in fact the only School to admit female Witchers in the source material), the current evidence potentially points toward her featuring as a protagonist or at least a key character in the upcoming Witcher saga.

Regardless of the approach CDPR chooses to take with the School of the Lynx with the new Witcher saga, it should be interesting to see new Witcher material tackling characters, places, and issues outside the now well-explored stories of Geralt of Rivia and the School of the Wolf. Considering everything that is known about the Lynx School, the canon School of the Cat could feature heavily due to it also being feline-inspired. Either way, it's exciting to see a new school feature in a new Witcher saga.
