Production on the highly anticipated new Tesla Roadster has been pushed back to 2022. However, that delay may just make the car even more desirable given some of the latest advancements in Tesla vehicles. These include the so-called 'SpaceX package' that Tesla CEO Elon Musk says will give the car a higher performance threshold using compressed air thrusters.

The Roadster was the first car Tesla ever produced and was released in 2008 before being discontinued in 2012, when the Model S was launched. The second-generation Roadster was initially unveiled by Musk in 2017. During the presentation, he set high expectations that it would be one of the most impressive vehicles the company had ever released. Some of the more standout features that Musk promised were the car's ability to go from 0-60 mph in just 1.9 seconds and to travel 600 miles on a single charge. However, one promise made at that event that has been broken was that the car would see release sometime in 2020.

Now we know that the new Roadster's production has been delayed to 2022 thanks to a tweet from Elon Musk himself. He explained that there were a couple of reasons why the company decided to push production of the vehicle back, including getting the company's Tri-Motor drive system right, as well as making sure there was a battery up to snuff for powering the car. This might not be the only thing delaying the Roadster, though, since we do know the company started prioritizing the completion of the Cybertruck.

SpaceX Rocket Or A New Tesla Vehicle?

Now that the Roadster has been pushed back to next year the biggest question is what to expect from the vehicle upon release. Tesla may have given consumers a bit of a preview without them realizing it, thanks to the release of the ita new Model S and Model X Plaid variants. The new Model S variants are capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 1.99 seconds — a very close approximation of the acceleration that Musk promised the Roadster would be capable of — and reaching a top speed of 200 mph. These figures are thanks to the new Tri-Motor All-Wheel Drive setup that Musk claimed he needed to get right for the Roadster.

Considering that Tesla's new Plaid variants are capable of reaching these performance levels while the tech is still in its infancy, it's very possible that the Roadster may be able to even surpass its originally promised performance specs with the extra time its being given to cook in the Tesla lab. That seems even more plausible when you consider the potential addition of the 'SpaceX package' that would help boost performance levels even more. The possibilities for the new Roadster make it more exciting than ever to be a Tesla enthusiast.
