Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: Son of Kal-El #3

In the latest issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El, Jon Kent proves that he'll be a better Man of Steel than his father, exceeding his ability to change the world. With Clark Kent needing to leave Earth for an extended period to face Mongul on Warworld, the original Superman is leaving his son in charge while he's gone as the new Superman. Furthermore, it's been confirmed that Jon can do things that Superman can't, particularly when it comes to speaking on important global issues and being a public voice for the truth (rather than just protecting it with his physical powers).

In previous issues of Superman: Son of Kal-El from writer Tom Taylor and artist John Timms, it had already been established that the original Superman rarely got involved as a leading influence or voice for the people of Earth because he's a Kryptonian. In Kal-El's eyes, it wouldn't be right for him to influence the course of his adoptive planet. In contrast, Superman's son, Jon, was born on Earth and is half-human, allowing him much more agency - and more of a right - to speak out. That's exactly what the new Superman does in the new Superman: Son of Kal-El #3.

While Jon began this new issue by saving 472 people (and their pets) from a collapsing building in four seconds, what's arguably even more impressive is that he went straight to a protest in support of refugees who were being forced to return to their oppressive nation. By standing with the protestors, Jon made a large impact on the public perspective that ultimately resulted in a positive change for the world. The original Superman even affirmed his confidence in the new Superman before he left to face Mongul, proving that Jon might very well be the better Man of Steel going forward.

It's becoming more and more clear in this new series that Jon Kent is not simply a Superman stand-in or casual replacement for Kal-El's Superman while he's away. Jon has become a new Superman for a new age, one able to do more to proactively bring about positive change in the world rather than just responding to threats as they come. That being said, while Jon's Superman can make quite the impact as the new Man of Steel, his actions and words will still have consequences. Case in point, as soon as the original Superman left Earth, the Kent Farm was blown up in retaliation for the words Jon said against the President of Gamorra (the nation the refugees were fleeing).

Now, it looks as though Jon will soon get a first-hand look at the negative impact his words can bring. While this will no doubt motivate him to fight harder to protect his family and friends, it seems as though he's about to enter into a major conflict with an entire nation's corrupt government - the exact type of scenario Clark Kent always tried to avoid. This means that Jon is going to be dealing with brand new threats and obstacles his father never had to face, so here's hoping the new and improved Superman is up for the challenge as the DC series continues.
