Warning! Spoilers ahead for Suicide Squad #6
In the latest issue of DC Comics' Suicide Squad, a new Superboy clone has been revealed, though it's one that has been right in front of readers since the series' first issue. The new series has seen Conner Kent being recruited into Task Force X against his will. Complicating things even more was the reveal that he's one of two Superboy clones currently active in the DC Universe.
The concept of Superboy being under the control of director Amanda Waller actually began in DC's Future State event, which saw Conner leading her new Justice Squad on Earth-3, having relocated to a world Waller believed actually wanted to be saved. With no other options, Conner relented to becoming Waller's darker Superman. And now, DC's new Suicide Squad series - from Robbie Thompson, Dexter Soy, Julio Ferreira, and Eduardo Pansica - sees Conner Kent being a part of Waller's latest Task Force X, though no explanation is given as to how he got arrested.
Suicide Squad #6 sees Nocturna revealing to Conner that his mind was "cloudy" when she read it, making it clear that Waller has been controlling what he can and can't remember. Conner doesn't even have any memory of how or why Waller arrested him. Still, Superboy ran point in the battle with Earth-3's Ultraman to save Bloodsport, as Waller had already marked Earth-3 as a prime world for her future plans. However, Superboy's battle with the evil Superman led to his vitals spiking. After a quick teleportation and escape to a hidden bunker, Conner is noticeably frustrated with Waller considering his past as a hero as opposed to being a villain like his teammates. However, when another Superboy shows up on the scene, Conner's entire background is called into question.
Looking at this new Superboy, it seems likely that he's the original clone of Superman and Lex Luthor who recently made a return in Brian Michael Bendis' Action Comics after being lost in the shuffle of DC's multiversal reboots. While he had been living with Superman's Ma and Pa Kent (who remembered him on sight), it was assumed that Waller somehow got her hands on him for this new series with his costume being changed back to his black Superman shirt/jeans combo. However, that doesn't appear to be the case now. Given the memory manipulations, a mysterious need for constant injections, and this reveal of the original Conner Kent, a strong guess would be that Amanda Waller created her own Superboy clone specifically for her use in the Suicide Squad. It would explain why Superman hasn't come flying in to save Conner.
While it's safe to assume that definitive answers will be forthcoming in future issues of Suicide Squad, it does track with Earth-3's Ultraman and his comment that the Task Force X Conner has "copies of copies" inside of him. All in all, while this may certainly be one of the darkest things Waller has ever done, it's still very on-brand for her character. Regardless, it's pretty evident that things are about to become really interesting for Suicide Squad's version of Superboy, seeing as how he's more than likely a clone of a clone (which may lead to his instability).
