A recent job listing by EA may point towards a new, upcoming Star Wars title and an entirely fresh IP from the team at Motive Studios. EA has the rights to develop games in the Star Wars universe, which it has retained despite its somewhat rocky history with the license thus far. So far, the publisher has sat at the helm of projects like Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Star Wars: Squadrons. Of these, Motive has been a development force behind both Battlefront II and, most recently, Squadrons.

It is no surprise that EA would continue to produce Star Wars projects with the wildly popular franchise’s license firmly in its control. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the traditional single-player action game developed by Respawn Entertainment, was a huge hit. Around this time last year, the Jedi adventure had reportedly sold in the neighborhood of eight million units which launched it into the high end of the company’s sales projections. The game’s popularity was enough of a reason to expect a sequel, but EA CEO Andrew Wilson all but confirmed fans suspicions in an earnings call earlier this year stating that the game was only the first in an ongoing franchise. Though fans are eager to see how Cal Kestis continues his journey, it is unlikely that the recent job listing is connected to Respawn’s game.

The job listing as posted by EA reveals very little regarding the nature of either the Star Wars project – except that it’s an action title and the team is starting work on it immediately – or the mysterious original IP. Even without this specific clarification, the post itself, which is seeking a software engineer for these projects, would have lent credence to the idea that Motive might be currently working on some kind of Star Wars game. However, the post still leaves a lot of questions unanswered for fans.

One of the most pressing is: exactly what Star Wars project is the post referring to? Perhaps the most likely candidates are EA’s more multiplayer-friendly titles. Star Wars: Battlefront II released back in 2017 and, despite the loot box controversy which plagued it, the game managed to course correct. Motive helped to develop Star Wars: Battlefront II in collaboration with studios like DICE and Criterion Games, so it is possible that this might be the Star Wars project listed in the job posting. However, Motive was also the main developer behind Star Wars: Squadrons, a title that came out this year which the team is still actively creating content for, like Baby Yoda Dashboard Flair.

While it was always a certainty that fans could expect more Star Wars video games in the future, it is exciting to see concrete evidence of a new project on the way. This EA job listing, while not greatly detailed, points to gamers receiving more fun content from a galaxy far far away sometime in the near future.
