Warning: contains spoilers for Ben Reilly: Spider-Man #1!

Marvel's newest version of Spider-Man has an origin story that puts Peter Parker's to shame - because it incorporates everything from the original Amazing Fantasy #15 adventure and then some. Peter Parker is known among Marvel Comics fans for being a human magnet to tragedy and woe; his life is filled with loss, grief, and death of numerous loved ones. But the new Spider-Man has all of that in spades...along with the terrible burden of not being the "true" Spider-Man.

In the 90s, comics thrived on sales-breaking events - momentous occasions in storylines in which grand changes would occur to the status quo of numerous comics. This was the decade in which Green Lantern turned evil and seized all the Power Rings, Batman's back was broken by a brutal new foe in the form of Bane, and even Superman died at the hands of Doomsday. Noticing the success of their Distinguished Competition, Marvel decided to center their massive event around Spider-Man - or rather, two of them, as a character was brought back from a one-off story in the 70s: Peter Parker's perfect clone Ben Reilly.

Created by the Jackal, Ben Reilly began his life believing he was Peter Parker. Initially used as a tool to attack Parker, both Spider-Men teamed up to fight their common enemy, but the battle ended with one of the webslingers dead - and notably, the issue was drawn in such a way as to conceal if the original or the clone survived the battle. Years later, the clone returned (he had never died to begin with), and thus began the Spider-Man Clone Saga, a labyrinthine series of events which culminated in Peter Parker's discovery that he was the clone the entire time...until Marvel editorial hastily backtracked said decision and restored him as the one true Spider-Man. But what of the clone?

Ben Reilly knows the pain of realizing his life is a lie, and even his name is a lie (which is why he abandoned the name Peter Parker and took a new name). But he also knows all the tragedy from Peter's early days - from being bullied at school to the fateful spider bite to the death of Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy. For all intents and purposes, Ben Reilly is Peter Parker who's life, through circumstances beyond his control, is unceremoniously taken away from him.

Ben Reilly eventually evolved into a separate character, but one mustn't forget that the two started out as the exact same person. In a way, Ben will never overcome his status as the clone Spider-Man. It appears that a prerequisite of obtaining the Spider-Man role is to have an origin story shrouded in misery, angst, and loss.
