The Pokemon Company announced New Pokemon Snap is currently in development and will be heading to the Nintendo Switch. It has been over 20 years since the original Pokemon Snap was released on the Nintendo 64.

Pokemon Snap was a fresh take on the Pokemon franchise allowing the player to take photos of Pokemon instead of capturing them inside of a Pokeball. While many thought that a port or remaster would be perfect for the Nintendo Switch, a new Pokemon title was revealed instead.

New Pokemon Snap was announced during the Pokemon Presents premiere. During the live stream on June 17, a gameplay trailer was shown for the new title. This trailer featured Pokemon from every generation as well as the classic style of gameplay from the original title on the Nintendo 64. The trailer opened with beautiful scenic shots of different Pokemon in their natural habitats. The trailer resembled the opening sequences for the Pokemon Sword and Shield trailers which featured imagery of the Wild Areas. After a few moments, a camera crosshair appeared on-screen overtop of a wild Pikachu signifying that this was a trailer for a new Pokemon Snap game.

The trailer also featured the nostalgic gameplay from the original title. This includes the camera's zoom function, throwing apples at Pokemon for them to react to, and the on-rails shooter style movement. In the original title, players were inside of a protective cart where they could safely take photos of wild Pokemon, but were also able to interact with Pokemon by tossing apples at them or at the environment. A score was given based on the quality and the pose in the photo, and interacting with certain Pokemon was the only way to progress to the next level. Tasks were also given to players to get pictures of certain Pokemon performing certain actions, and completing tasks rewarded players with a higher score.

New Pokemon Snap Pikachu

New Pokemon Snap looks as if it will follow the same formula of following a set path while attempting to get the best possible photo or every Pokemon. This new title has the potential to be a much larger game than the original. Twenty years ago, generation 1 Pokemon were the only ones included in the original snap title. While New Pokemon Snap probably won't feature all 890 Pokemon, it will more than likely feature more than the original 151. No release date was given for New Pokemon Snap, but the gameplay trailer could mean the release date is sometime soon.
