There are many species hiding throughout the Lental region in New Pokémon Snap. Whether players are on the hunt for the perfect picture of Scorbunny in Florio Nature Park at night, or hoping to capture a shot of a Magikarp suspended in the air, the diversity can keep a player busy for hours. While getting great pictures of a Pokémon can be exciting, many New Pokémon Snap players may be specifically on the lookout for the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon lurking in different areas.

Currently, there are 10 Legendary and Mythical species in New Pokémon Snap. These Pokémon include Xerneas, Shaymin, Mew, Celebi, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Suicune, Diancie, Manaphy, and Jirachi. Like all other Pokémon living in the Lental region, players are able to capture the unique actions of these rare Pokémon species for their Photodex, and will need a one, two, three, and four-star rated photo for each to complete the entires.

One of the primary features of the Lental region is the Illumina Pokémon. These six glowing guardians can be found in Illumina Spots scattered throughout the region. While they are important rare encounters, the majority of Illumina Pokémon are not Legendary or Mythical. The only Legendary Pokémon who possesses Illumina abilities is the Fairy-type Xerneas who originates from Pokémon X and Y's Kalos region. Xerneas is also the only Legendary or Mythical Pokémon to appear as a part of the game's main story.

New Pokémon Snap's Legendary And Mythical Encounters Are Post Game

In order to locate other Legendary or Mythical Pokémon in New Pokémon Snap, players will first have to complete the main storyline. Unlike previous Pokémon games, which introduced the influence of Legendaries during main gameplay and weaved their appearance into the primary story, New Pokémon Snap's Legendary photo hunts are mostly a post-game activity. While this gives fans incentive to complete the storyline, it can also be frustrating for those who hoped to spot these rare Pokémon earlier on.

While Xerneas appears in the main story before the credits actually roll, others won't be as easy. Mythical Pokémon Mew requires players to look in the right direction while throwing a Fluffruit to make it appear in Founja Jungle at night, and New Pokémon Snap's Legendary Suicune will send players on a wild goose hunt through Shiver Snowfields on both the day and night maps before it will be available for a photo opportunity. Because of this, catching a glimpse of Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in New Pokémon Snap is a rare and exciting occurrence.
