Twentieth Century Fox released the first teaser trailer for New Mutants, the upcoming X-Men spinoff film directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). The studio initially kicked off their mutant superhero franchise with Bryan Singer's X-Men in 2000, which was followed by two more films in the original trilogy before X-Men: First Class rebooted the franchise and X-Men: Days of Future Past rewrote the timeline. In addition to continuing the main thread of X-Men movies, Fox has begun branching out to include spinoffs that don't necessarily fit within the central timeline. Both 2016's Deadpool and this year's Logan have found great success in terms of critical acclaim and box office gross as X-Men spinoff movies.

Although Logan was the only X-Men movie to debut in 2017, Fox has a number of films slated for 2018, including New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix - plus, it was recently announced Gambit will release in early 2019. Of these four movies, New Mutants is the next to hit theaters, with an April 2018 release date. In order to hype to upcoming X-Men project, Fox has debuted the first teaser trailer for the film.

Twentieth Century Fox unveiled the teaser trailer for New Mutants, which you can watch above, after director Josh Boone teased its release on Instagram. According to the official logline, the film follows five young mutants who are just learning to understand and use their powers while they're trapped in a secret facility. Boone has teased that New Mutants is a horror film, and Fox studio exec Stacey Snider compared the X-Men spinoff to "a haunted house movie." Fans can see for themselves from the above trailer that Boone and Snider were spot on in their comments.

In addition to directing, Boone co-wrote the script with Knate Gwaltney (Kidnap, Cardboard Boxer), while X-Men movie vet Simon Kinberg served as producer on the film based on characters created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. The five main characters in New Mutants are Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt), Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Sam Guthrie aka Cannonball (Charlie Heaton), and Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga). They'll be joined by a mentor character, Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga).

Now that Fox has debuted the first look at New Mutants fans and casual moviegoers alike may have a better idea of what to expect from this particular X-Men spinoff. While New Mutants filmed in Boston, Massachusetts over the summer, very little information got out from the set and we previously knew very little about the movie. Certainly, since there are exactly six months until New Mutants hits theaters, there's still plenty more to see in terms of a full trailer and the studio's major promotional push closer to the release date. But with that said, this first New Mutants teaser will undoubtedly whet the appetites of X-Men fans looking for more unique spinoffs featuring the mutant superheroes.
