Fans will finally get a fresh look at The New Mutants, with a new official trailer announced for next week. Co-written and directed by The Fault in Our Stars' Josh Boone, The New Mutants was initially scheduled to follow the massively underperforming Dark Phoenix installment as the next stage of the X-Men saga. Boone and fellow co-writer Knate Lee pitched the film as the first part of a new trilogy, based on the comic book series crafted by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. The project was officially greenlit in May 2015, with filming taking place in Boston throughout 2017. The first official New Mutants teaser was unveiled later that same year.

The New Mutants will follow a disparate group of empowered teenagers who find themselves imprisoned and tormented at a top-secret facility. Conceived in the vein of Nightmare on Elm Street and The Shining, Boone envisioned his adaptation as a full-fledged horror movie. The aforementioned teaser served to emphasize such elements. Offering a fresh and unique take on the long-running franchise, the teaser was extremely well-received. Despite that, The New Mutants' release date was repeatedly pushed back as a result of reshoots. The delays were only further exacerbated when Disney's acquisition of Fox was finalized. With Disney said to be unimpressed with The New Mutants, even more reshoots and test screenings were scheduled.

For a time, many wondered whether New Mutants would go straight to Disney+ or even see the light of day at all. Fortunately, news first broke regarding a new trailer via FandomWire. Following that, Boone took to Instagram earlier today to offer a confirmation himself. Posting a simple image of the film's official logo, Boone reiterated that New Mutants would officially hit theaters in the first week of April 2020, and that a new trailer was on its way. Declaring that it had been personally supervised by himself and Lee, Boone announced that said trailer would indeed be released online next Monday, January 6th. Check out the full post below:

The New Mutants boasts a star-studded cast led by Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin (aka Magik). In the comics, Illyana is the younger sister of Colossus - who was most recently seen in Deadpool 2. Alongside Joy, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams plays Rahne Sinclair (aka Wolfsbane), Henry Zaga plays Roberto da Costa (aka Sunspot), Blu Hunt will portray Danielle Moonstar (aka Mirage), and Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton will star as Sam Guthrie (aka Cannonball). Alice Braga rounds out the rest of the confirmed cast, playing the group's mentor Cecilia Reyes. Additionally, Antonio Banderas also reportedly feature as a villain in the post-credit scene. Prior to reshoots, it was reported that the post-credits scene would have featured a highly-anticipated Mister Sinister appearance.

With the exception of Magik, each of the young characters served on the original New Mutants team in the comics. Given the apparent absence of Xi'an Coy Manh (aka Karma), it's likely that Joy's character will emerge as the group leader. Just how faithfully the film will remain to the source material, however, remains to be seen. Equally, it's unclear whether or not the latest round of reshoots has altered the tone and did indeed remove all connection to previous X-Men films. And, for that matter, if it has been retrofitted to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whatever the case, all of these questions and more have helped to maintain anticipation for the finished product. As such, news of a fresh look at The New Mutants will no doubt be met with much interest due to the potential answers it could offer ahead of the official release.
