As Josh Boone's New Mutants heads for some reshoots, it sounds like the movie is undergoing something of an overhaul as it adds a brand new character.
In keeping with FOX's darker world of X-Men movies, New Mutants promises to be a genre-defining superhero horror. Focusing on a younger team of mutants as they come to grips with their powers, the movie will be a loose adaptation of Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz's 'Demon Bear Saga' from the '80s. The current roster of character for New Mutants already includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, and Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane. However, it sounds like we will find some new blood to come under the care of Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
Reshoots to movies are nothing majorly new - and usually involves axing characters - but THR promises that New Mutants will be adding someone else to its already impressive cast of young stars. According to the site, New Mutants is set for reshoots this summer:
"The horror-themed New Mutants will undergo a round of additional photography this summer that will insert a new character into the thriller that is dated for Feb. 22, 2019."
However, given that we have had that eerie first trailer and an equally chilling marketing campaign that has focused on each of the individual mutants, adding another main role at this stage is pretty unheard of.
Over the years, the New Mutants team has had some notable stars, but who could this mystery new addition be? Karma, Warpath, Warlock, and Boom-Boom could all be wonderful characters to explore. Boone has already said he would like Karma and Warpath for a possible sequel, but if that isn't on the cards, maybe one of them will find a place in The New Mutants? However, if not a young member of the team, could it be the return of someone else from the world of X-Men movies? An obvious choice would be James McAvoy as Charles Xavier or even Patrick Stewart returning to the role after James Mangold's Logan. Elsewhere, the battle with the Demon Bear has involved Psylocke over the years, so we could even see Olivia Munn return from X-Men: Apocalypse.
That being said, the FOXverse is planning to squeeze a lot in before it falls under the umbrella of the MCU. This year we can expect Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, while New Mutants is one of two X-Men movies set for 2019 after it was shunted from its original release date of April this year. Williams herself was keen to downplay rumors of reshoots for fear it could affect the movie's hype, but adding an additional cast member could actually do it the world of good. Either way, the addition of a new character would suggest that it is someone big from the comics rather than just a hospital orderly from the facility that the kids are being held. We will likely know more as it develops, but New Mutants is still on track for its new release date of February 22.
