It's now being reported that The New Mutants could result in almost half the movie being re-filmed, in an effort to add characters and make the whole thing scarier. Though Fox has been hoping to spin-off their X-Men franchise for sometime, it wasn't until the success of Deadpool that they knew it could work. Still, The New Mutants has always seemed like a gamble, seeing as it focuses on a relatively unknown group of characters and merges the superhero and horror genres. However, the first trailer for The New Mutants was well received earlier this year, and seemed to foreshadow another offbeat hit for Fox.

Things quickly took a turn for the worse, however, when Fox reshuffled The New Mutants along with Gambit and Deadpool 2. The latter was bumped up two weeks - which certainly pleased fans - but The New Mutants was pushed back an entire year to 2019. It was said at first that efforts were being made to make the film scarier, before a later report revealed that at least one new character is being added. Yesterday, however, both New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix were pushed back, with the former being delayed by another six months - signaling that its reshoots are more complicated than previously believed.

Comic Book is reporting that the reshoots are indeed meant to make The New Mutants scarier and more of a proper horror film (with mutants). Apparently, director Josh Boone was happy with his cut but the studio wanted something that was even more tonally unique for the X-Men movie franchise, a la Deadpool and Logan. As such, the film is now undergoing more extensive reshoots and it's speculated that as much as 50% of the project will have been redone, by the time that the reshoots are complete.

The New Mutants Movie Cast

Along with the film being made scarier, the reshoots will add at least one new character, possibly two. These won't be small parts either, as the report indicates they will be part of the movie throughout - thus the major reshoots. Additional filming is common for blockbusters, but heavy reshoots can have varied effects. (For every Rogue One: A Star Wars Story there's a Justice League.) It's also not clear if Boone's position is in question, as he's said to have major creative differences with the studio. There was a time when Fox's interference led to inferior takes on Deadpool and Wolverine, so the idea that they're attempting to make things more idiosyncratic against the wishes of creatives is certainly ironic.

Along with the extra filming for The New MutantsX-Men: Dark Phoenix is undergoing major reshoots. It seems these reshoots, and the scheduling conflicts that they will cause, are to blame for the film being pushed back in the first place. The Dark Phoenix reshoots aren't expected to be too extensive though, given that it's only been delayed by three months. When it comes to The New Mutants, however, it seems that we may eventually get a very different film than the one the original teaser trailer promised.
