Director Josh Boone has expressed that his highly anticipated upcoming film, The New Mutants, was made to be seen on the big screen. After becoming the victim of numerous release delays, The New Mutants is finally set to be released in theaters on August 28th. As movie theater chains slowly begin to open their doors at last, the film will be one of the first to be released in theaters amidst the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, New Mutants tickets officially went on sale, cementing the fact it will indeed be released at the end of the month as planned.

The New Mutants follows five young mutants, who are beginning to discover their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will, who must fight in order to escape the demons from their respective pasts and save themselves. The film, which is directed by Boone, stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, Adam Beach, and Dustin Ceithamer. While a handful of Disney films originally intended for theaters, such as Artemis Fowl, have instead been released on Disney+, the studio has decided not to do the same with The New Mutants. Recently, Boone spoke out in defense of the decision to push forward with a theatrical release.

In an interview with Heroic Hollywood, director Josh Boone discussed why he thinks The New Mutants being released in theaters is the right call. When speaking to why he thinks the film should be seen in theaters, Boone stated,

"I mean the last act of the movie was designed to be seen on big screens, like IMAX screens, like it has a massive bear in it and crazy sound design. And I even found watching the sort of more intimate moments earlier in the movie be sort of … I don’t know man, sort of almost more magical on a movie theater. And I do think people should be going to the movies."

New Mutants Team Shot

After Disney made the difficult decision to release Mulan on Disney+ this September, one of their biggest upcoming films, fans wondered if the same would be done with The New Mutants. Fortunately, Boone recently discussed why The New Mutants is unable to be released on Disney+, quickly dispelling any and all rumors that the comic book film was headed on a trajectory for the streaming platform. While the Fox Marvel film won't be skipping theaters after all, many have began to wonder if Disney will release more of their highly anticipated films, such as Black Widow and Soul, on the streaming service, especially if Mulan performs well.

The New Mutants has faced a turbulent, harrowing road to release, which is putting it lightly. Usually, a film getting delayed as much as this one has would signal a terrible film that is trying to be concealed by the studio. However, considering the pedigree behind the production and the fascinating lore being utilized, it remains a film worth being excited for. While it may have been more profitable for Disney to release the film on their streaming service, it's encouraging the studio feels confident enough in the film to stick to its theatrical release. That, coupled with Boone's comments and the opening scene released recently, make it easy to see this is a film meant to be seen on the silver screen. Fans will finally be able to see if The New Mutants was worth the wait when it hits theaters next week.
