The New Mutants film will do the comics and comic book fans justice says one of the movie's stars. Twentieth Century Fox's long-running X-Men franchise received its first true expansion last year with the release of Deadpool (following their first failed attempt with X-Men Origins: Wolverine). And now, they are pushing forward with even more mutant-related projects that don't necessarily involve the core X-Men characters.
Aside from X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the franchise's recent small-screen extension with FX's Legion and FOX's The Gifted, 20th Century Fox is currently in development on movies such as Gambit and X-Force, which will continue to grow the overall franchise. But, before any of those movies hit the big screen, one of the first spinoff films releasing next year is Josh Boone's New Mutants, co-written by Knate Gwaltney, Scott Neustadter, and Michael H. Weber, and is based on the mutant superhero team of the same name, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982. Although the movie will be a departure from the traditional X-Men films, one of the film's stars says it will be faithful to the source material.
Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Magik (Colossus' sorceress sister, Illyana Rasputin), recently attended the UK premiere of her latest film, Thoroughbreds. In an interview with HeyUGuys, she promised that fans won't be disappointed with New Mutants and that the film will abide by the source material, despite differing from the other X-Men movies.
"I think the nicest thing about it is that Josh Boone, our director - he’s just such a fan of the comics, and he really loves them so much that he’s really interested in just making sure that we do the comics justice for the people that love the characters. You know, we all feel so lucky to be such incredibly loved characters. So, while it’s definitely a departure from the X-Men movies, the fans won’t be disappointed. We definitely kept all the important bits in there."
What's interesting is that while there are multiple X-Men movies releasing next year, the New Mutants film will be the one that differs the most from the crowd. As Taylor-Joy says, the film will be a "departure" from the traditional X-Men films, something that studio head Stacey Snider recently supported; she described the film as being "a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers." However, the actress makes it a point to say that they've maintained the core aspect of the movies that many moviegoers have come to value over the years.
Of course, now that New Mutants has wrapped production, fans will be wondering when they should expect the first look at the new X-Men film. Considering that the movie is scheduled to bow in April 2018, audiences should anticipate seeing the first teaser trailer sometime soon.
