Rainbow Rowell, fresh off a stint writing Runaways, will chart a new course for She-Hulk in 2022. She-Hulk has been through hell in the pages of Jason Aaron’s Avengers, having been kidnapped by the sinister Red Widow and transformed into a killing machine, and now she deals with the aftermath in a brand-new series debuting in January 2022.

She-Hulk is Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin. After receiving a gamma-infused blood transfusion from Bruce, Jennifer became She-Hulk. Unlike her cousin, She-Hulk retained her intelligence while in her gamma-irradiated state. In addition to having been a member of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, She-Hulk has carved out a niche as a lawyer representing the superhero community. Recently, however, She-Hulk has struggled with controlling her darker impulses, even using mantras to keep her focus. She has lived in fear of losing control. In the “World War She-Hulk” story currently running in Avengers, The Winter Guard, under the direction of the Red Widow and Dracula, kidnapped She-Hulk and brainwashed her, turning her into a new version of the Winter Soldier. While the story is still unfolding, Marvel has plans for She-Hulk, giving her a new title written by Rowell with art by Roge Antonio.

The press release offered little in the way of plot details, other than that following the events of “World War She-Hulk,” she is looking to put the past behind her and return to her law practice. However, she soon finds herself confronting a mystery from her past, one that will draw her “back to bashing.” The announcement offered no other details, nor any advance art.

She-Hulk announcement

While exact story specifics remain a mystery, Marvel has promised that She-Hulk, and the other seven titles announced, will shape the future of the Marvel Universe. She-Hulk is currently under the control of the Red Widow and the Winter Guard, so while it is clear that She-Hulk will escape their influence, she will continue to carry the scars, so how will this play out in her new title? Rainbow Rowell breathed new life into the Runaways, creating new stories that honored the past while moving the characters forward - making Rowell perfect to chronicle this new chapter in She-Hulk’s life.

The entire Hulk family has been put through their paces over the last few years, none perhaps more so than She-Hulk, but now, with former Runaways writer Rainbow Rowell at the helm, she is set to begin a new chapter in her life.
