There may be a new Legend of Zelda game coming out sooner than fans might have expected. It's possible that Nintendo is further along with the next installment in the franchise than the company has previously indicated.

The Legend of Zelda remains one of the hottest properties in the video game industry thanks to an incredible return to form with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which just so happened to coincide with a similar return to form with Nintendo's overall console presence). The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains to be one of the most successful Legend of Zelda titles ever produced, while also being a contender for one of the best games Nintendo has ever made in-series or out, and video game fans everywhere are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Link and Zelda's dizzying journeys through different universes and timelines.

According to a recent statement made by Game Informer's Imran Khan on the website's most recent podcast, a new Legend of Zelda game might not be as far away as many critics believe. He said,"The next Zelda will probably be sooner than we think... I will talk to you guys off camera about stuff." Although his statement is short and vague, it's evident that the follow-up game to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn't as far off as fans might have believed. Khan also down some potential rumors in regard to the upcoming game's development and gameplay. When asked if the game is being developed by the Triforce Heroes team and will include co-op gameplay, Khan simply stated, "Not exactly."

new legend of zelda game coming

Though it's not much to go on yet, the fact that this information comes from a trusted industry veteran at least gives The Legend of Zelda fans something to speculate over. That said, it's also possible that the game Khan is referring to isn't an original sequel in the series, but rather a rumored port of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword onto the Switch.

Even if the game that Khan mentioned turns out to be a new, original Legend of Zelda entry, his quote about its release being "sooner than we think" still isn't much to go on.  For context, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took approximately five years to develop, and it released in March 2017. Even if another team was working on a new Legend of Zelda game to follow Breath of the Wild during the latter game's development, it's possible that the game is still a few year away from being released. At the very least, though, the future of The Legend of Zelda exists somewhere on the horizon, even if the details are vague. Given Breath of the Wild's staggering success, it wouldn't be a surprise to discover that Nintendo has even bigger plans for the iconic Link than the gaming giant did prior to Breath of the Wild's release.
