Warning: contains spoilers for Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1!

The Avengers just met the new Juggernaut of the Marvel Universe, and the magical child also known as 'the Survivor' is about as far from Cain Marko as it's possible to get. Doctor Strange's murder has brought down the mystical shield which protected Earth from invasion, leading to a huge influx of magical threats, including an army of beings sporting incredible strength and familiar domed helmets.

While generally an antagonist of the X-Men in the modern day, Marvel's Juggernaut is actually the earthly avatar of the Demon Lord Cyttorak - a magical being from the Crimson Cosmos who feeds on the chaos and destruction caused by the bearer of his Crimson Gem. Cain Marko and Piotr Rasputin have each served as notable Juggernauts in the comics, but with Cain recently rejecting Cyttorak's patronage, the stage was set for a new hero or villain to take up the role, whether for good or evil. Marvel's marketing for Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1 promised the team would face off against "a rampaging new Juggernaut," but that promise has been fulfilled in a way few fans expected.

Death of Doctor Strange: The Avengers #1 - from Alex Paknadel, Ryan Bodenheim, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit - introduces the Survivor. A young girl who hails from the Crimson Cosmos, the Survivor was fathered by Cyttorak, gaining access to his strongest weapon: the Crimson Bands. Magical manifestations of Cyttorak's power, the Crimson Bands have long been a favorite spell of Doctor Strange, and wielding them is the Survivor's main power. When the Crimson Cosmos is invaded by the Three Mothers and their monstrous Child (the main antagonists taking advantage of Doctor Strange's demise), the Survivor shapes an army from the Crimson Bands, though she is sadly unable to save her people.

The issue sees the Survivor's army of Crimson Band Juggernauts build a psionic tower so her people's story can be told, leaving her on Earth to once again try to protect a society from the Child. While this is a task she failed at before, the Survivor is an incredibly powerful being. Able to shape the Crimson Bands into the form of her father, the Survivor can command a small army of energy-form Juggernauts, which are shown to be strong enough to injure Thor. However, the constructs are hollow, and shatter when hit with sufficient force, making them something of a glass cannon - able to deal great damage but not withstand it. Despite this, the Survivor's constructs are strong enough to crush regular humans underfoot, and the hero herself can 'wear' the constructs as armor, perhaps strengthening the forms she inhabits.

The constructs seem able to work autonomously on simple goals - fighting and building the tower - and their ability to rapidly build a psionic delivery system suggests that the Survivor has some magical knowledge to go along with her inherited ability to summon and shape the Crimson Bands. It's also implied that she's able to form constructs other than the Juggernauts fans see in this issue, but chooses to replicate her father, as she can't think of anything scarier.

Beyond these abilities, it's possible the Survivor doesn't age (her people are described as ageless), and the identity of her birth mother is kept ambiguous. She can use the Crimson Bands in a manner similar to telekinesis, levitating metal in order to build her psionic tower. So far, it's unclear if the Survivor will officially take the name of 'Juggernaut' - she is Cyttorak's child, not his avatar, and Cain Marko is still using the title, but her constructs and armor strongly evoke the role, and Marvel long ago established the precedent for younger legacy heroes sharing the names of their older counterparts. With the Child on its way, the Avengers will be glad to have the Survivor on their side, just as Juggernaut fans will be thrilled to see such a meaty addition to the character's surprisingly deep lore and history.
