A website domain update for Infamous has fans hoping that a new game for the superhero series in currently development. In 2009, Sucker Punch set aside Sly Cooper's stealthy antics in exchange for Cole MacGrath's electromagnetic powers in Infamous.
The open-world action-adventure title placed players in a world where they could either assume the role of hero or villain based on narrative choices. Those choices then informed how Cole's electromagnetic abilities manifested, giving players reason to explore the game in at least two separate playthroughs. Sucker Punch revisited its comic book-inspired world a couple of years later, as Cole's next adventure took him to New Marais - a New Orleans-esque setting filled with fresh gameplay possibilities. The end of the sequel set a new status quo for the fictional superpowered universe, which engendered the rise of the police state found in Infamous: Second Son's Seattle setting. But once the Delsin Rowe-starring adventure hit PS4 in early 2014, followed by the standalone First Light expansion, Sucker Punch switched gears to Ghost of Tsushima, leaving Infamous' future hanging in the balance.
Yesterday, industry insider and XboxEra host Nick Baker hinted that Infamous could resurface during the PlayStation Showcase later this week. While Baker told fans to take the information with a grain of salt, Twitter user Gaming Updates and Countdowns (via MP1st) shared a screenshot of a website domain update for the brand. The screenshot in question notably showed that Infamousthegame.com domain received an update a couple of months ago in late June. Naturally, this sparked hopes of a potential revival for Sucker Punch's dormant superhero series.
Of course, an updated website name may not mean much in the long run. And, apart from Baker's rumor and the domain name filling, there exists nothing concrete to suggest Infamous' hopeful return is indeed on the docket. Plus, recent job postings all point to Sucker Punch staffers being hard at work on a potential Ghost of Tsushima sequel. It is worth noting, however, that Sony recently committed to investing millions in the expansion of its existing teams, presumably to allow more studios to operate in a two-team structure à la Insomniac Games. Who's to say, then, that Sucker Punch doesn't already have two groups working on separate projects?
If Sony does plan on unveiling a new Infamous title, or perhaps a remastered collection, such news could go live during the PS5-centric PlayStation Showcase. The event will air on Thursday, September 9 at 1:00 PM PT.
