New Girl has been renewed for a seventh and final season. It’s the time of year where TV fans hope for the best for their favorite shows: renewal season. Some get the axe (such as Last Man Standing, Powerless, and 2 Broke Girls), some others are renewed (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and The Exorcist), and in very exceptional cases there are some shows which are canceled and then uncanceled, such as Timeless.

Truth is that no one is safe and the wait to know if your favorite TV show will continue or not can be a long and tedious one. The wait is over for New Girl fans, with the group is coming back to the loft for one more go around.

According to Variety, Fox’s sitcom starring Zooey Deschanel has been renewed for a seventh and final season. Said season will be a short one with eight episodes instead of its usual run of more than 20. Variety also shares that the series’ Season 6 didn’t do as well as its previous seasons but being the studio’s longest-running live-action comedy on the air it’s an important property to Fox.

Zooey Deschanel in New Girl

Had the show not being renewed, it would have ended up on a good note seeing as Season 6 gave closure to each character and even revealed a series-long mystery: Schmidt’s first name. This was likely because cancellation was looming. However, in classic fashion the finale also left the door open for a new season, so there’s more to see about the characters and their futures.

New Girl follows Jess (Zooey Deschanel) a bubbly teacher who, with the help of her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone), finds a new place to stay after a surprise breakup with her boyfriend. Jess moves in with three guys: Nick (Jake Johnson), an underachieving bartender; Schmidt (Max Greenfield), an over-confident ladies’ man; Coach (Damon Wayans Jr) a cocky former athlete who now works as a personal trainer and who was replaced in the series by Winston (Lamorne Morris), another former professional athlete adapting to life back in the US.

Throughout the series the audience has met their families, partners, friends, foes, and some of their unachieved life plans, such as Nick’s desire of writing a zombie novel – which he appropriately achieved last year.

Although the last season will be a short one, we can be sure it will be enough to give each character and pair the closure they deserve. Hopefully they will continue its unique dose of humor and won’t go to predictable places as they did in this past season.

New Girl will return in the Fall.
