New Girl has many references to other TV shows, movies, and celebrities, and there’s a very sneaky one about Megan Fox’s role in the horror movie Jennifer’s Body – here’s what it is. New Girl was created by Elizabeth Meriwether and premiered on Fox in 2011. The series was very well received from the beginning, allowing it to live on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2018. New Girl was mostly praised for its tone and the performances of its main cast, particularly those of Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson.
New Girl followed Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a young teacher who after finding out that her boyfriend was cheating on her, moved into a loft with three strangers she casually found on the internet. Adapting to a new life all of a sudden wasn’t easy for anyone, but Jess eventually became very close to her roommates Schmidt (Greenfield), Nick Miller (Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris), with her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) also joining the fun and becoming a part of this unique family. Jess lived at the loft for the whole series, but she was absent in season 5 and her room was taken by another character: Reagan, played by Megan Fox.
In New Girl season 5, Jess was called for jury duty and was absent for a couple of episodes, so the boys rented her room. Reagan, a pharmaceutical sales rep, needed a place to stay while in town and rented Jess’ room, and she ended up getting romantically involved with Nick. Reagan was very well-received by New Girl fans and Jess herself, as they got along quite well and even joked with each other, and among those fun moments was a hidden reference to Jennifer’s Body. On one occasion, Jess asked Reagan how she could still look so good after a long flight, to which Reagan jokingly replied that she made a deal with the devil.
Jennifer’s Body was directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, and followed the title character, played by Megan Fox, and her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried). When Jennifer and Needy attended the concert of an indie band named Low Shoulder, a suspicious fire engulfed the bar, killing several people. A shocked Jennifer then agreed to leave with the band, but it was all a trick to use her as a sacrifice to Satan in exchange for fame and fortune. However, as Jennifer wasn’t a virgin as they believed, she became permanently possessed and had to feed off of men, killing them in the process. Reagan’s “deal with the devil” line, then, serves as a subtle but fun reference to one of Megan Fox’s most memorable roles.
Reagan stuck around until season 6, where she broke up with Nick and they moved on, with Nick and Jess getting back together for good now. Reagan’s arrival and Megan Fox’s performance were some of the best surprises New Girl had to offer, and a reference to Jennifer’s Body fitted the character and the series' tone and style quite well, while also giving fans of the movie a little treat.
