Every sitcom is full of relationships and dates, and those couples that every fan is rooting for or against. New Girl is certainly no exception, and this series is full of dynamic, hilarious, unique, and intriguing characters. That's also definitely true about all of their relationships, and fans probably know what it would be like to date Nick or Cece or Winston.

Of course, it's time to figure out what it would be like to have one of them as an ex. Everyone has those stereotypical exes that we just can't seem to avoid, and the loft of 4D would fit into these tropes pretty well. Every member of this crew is a type of 'bad ex-boyfriend'.

Nick - The Ghost

New Girl Nick Suit

Nick as an ex would definitely be like dating a ghost. Everyone saw what happened with Caroline and Reagan, and Nick would definitely be long gone before anyone could ask any questions.

While Jess might be an exception, everyone who dated a guy like Nick before he found 'the one' would definitely attest to the fact that they never spoke to him again.

Cece - The Never-Forgotten One

New Girl Cece

This is the ex that closure didn't exist for. You still find yourself asking where it all went wrong, and why it didn't end up going right. It's hard to remember why it even ended.

Like Cece, this type of ex is hard to forget and even harder to forgive its failed relationship. They're always a spark in the back of your mind - even if you don't even want to date them anymore.

Sam - The "Nice" Guy

New Girl Sam Doctor

To be fair, Jess kind of broke Sam into a million pieces, but he'll still always be that 'nice' guy. He's handsome, charming, kind, and smart, and he's the one everyone is bringing home to their mom.

However, after things go sideways, it's pretty apparent that they weren't actually that nice - and maybe really only cared about themselves. Sam is everyone's sitcom crush, but he's the "nice" guy.

Reagan - The Bad Boy

New Girl Reagan

Reagan is everyone's wild fantasy. She's the 'Achilles heel' of every man and woman, and it was nearly impossible to resist her mysterious, cool, intelligent, and fiery vibes - regardless the 'bad boy' stuff they do.

The bad boy is one ex everyone needs to have, and it'll be a throwback to youth and a care-free life. Of course, they're not the one - even if we wanted them to be.

Coach - The Ex With Benefits

New Girl Coach and May

If any fan of this show is being honest, it's that they'd never really give up on Coach. He's not marriage material, really, but he is that ex that's really hard to let go of. Together, you agree to have fun until either of you really settle down.

Coach is fun and spontaneous, and he's that ex that you're still texting for a good night out, even if there's no love or romance there.

Winston - The Back-Up Plan

New Girl Winston & Aly

Winston actually deserves a lot more credit than just being that ex that is the 'back-up plan', but it's honestly nothing but a compliment. This ex is the one that you still love and respect.

When you both turn 40, you have a pact to just marry each other. There's no hate, and you wouldn't be miserable spending the rest of your life with them. Winston is totally that for all fans, because he's one of the best guys out there.

Robby - The "Good On Paper" Ex

New Girl Robby & Jess

There's literally nothing wrong with Robby, and it's honestly pretty impossible not to love him. He's quirky, kind, selfless, smart, and totally funny, and he checks off every single box anyone could want.

However, there just isn't that spark, and things sizzle out and you realize that you were better off as friends. He'll find someone else, because he's perfect, but at least you got your shot.

Schmidt - The Heart-Breaker

New Girl Schmidt

Schmidt definitely had his fair share of women who left him, but he's also the one that's totally capable of breaking hearts. He is charming and funny and smart and handsome, and looking back, he breaks your heart again.

He always pops into your mind on a bad day, just to really drive home that heart break. This one sticks out among the rest as the worst heart breaker of them all.

Aly - The Unavoidable Ex

New Girl Aly & Winston

This ex is the one that you always cross paths with after the breakup, and nothing positive ever comes from it. Even if it's pleasantries or fiery arguments, it always somehow ends in disaster.

There's a lot of passion flying around, and this is the ex you avoid at all costs. It has nothing to do with them, and Aly is far from hateable, but she's almost too loveable and fiery to keep any kind of relationship with post-breakup. Luckily for Winston, they're definitely a couple that's not going away.

Jess - The One That Got Away

Jessica Day in the loft in New Girl.

There's nothing to do but realize that Jess is the perfect friend and partner, and that everyone who dated her will always miss her quirks, humor, and brilliance.

She's the one that got away, and that you always regret not making it work with. You'll probably always love them, even if you know you'll never be with them. They didn't leave any sour taste in your romance book.
