Coach was only on New Girl for a short while, but he was one of the most entertaining characters. Although the series had to get rid of his character after the pilot, it was awesome that he returned later on. He was very flawed and easy to dislike at times, but that made fans appreciate his character development significantly more. Coach showed a lot of growth, even if his storyline had to be cut short at the end of the day.

Coach went through a lot of negative moments, but they seemed to help build up to his happy times as the series progressed. When he first after the pilot, he definitely had a lot of insecurities and handled heartbreak in a rather unhealthy manner. Yet, the show did an amazing job fixing all of this, which made his short time on the show feel worthwhile and completed. It was a fun journey with him, and one has to admire how much better he ended up becoming through his happy moments.

He Got His Nickname

From the very beginning, it was clear that Coach was meant to help people in athletics and fitness. He ended up getting his nickname in Latvia during Winston's basketball game, as he coached the players from the sidelines.

Together, Nick and Schmidt came up with the nickname, and Coach immediately liked it and told them to high-five. This was where the legend of Coach was born, as this part of his character became his true identity.

He Moved Back Into The Loft

After a break-up with his ex, Coach found himself back into the loft. He did not handle it well, as he decided to go to a strip club with the guys as a way to cope with it. Of course, this led to him letting out his true feelings while there.

From this point on, Coach progressed slowly, as he had an outstanding group of friends that helped him along the way. Had he not moved into the loft, he likely would have stayed the same and went through even more unhealthy patterns.

His Friendship With Jess

Coach was a bit cold towards Jess when he first moved into the loft. He referred to her as Nick's girlfriend and often forgot her actual name. Jess put in a lot of effort to get close to him, as she even pretended to be a Pistons fan as a way to bond with him.

From here, the two became quite close, as Jess was always there for him and vise versa. They had an underrated friendship, as Jess really was the major friend who helped Coach be a better person at the end of the day.

He Enjoyed Being A Health Teacher

Jess helped Coach get a job at her school as a health teacher. At first, Coach was pessimistic about the new position, but he quickly loved it because he was able to scream at his students. He even became the school's volleyball coach too.

Coach did great while he worked with children, and it seemed to make him very happy. In fact, he showed a lot of joy when he coached the volleyball team and became very close to his students in the process.

He Got Close With Cece After Their Bad Fling

Cece and Coach had a very short-term fling, and it was a complete disaster. Things were a bit awkward for them after it, but they actually became good friends shortly after. They often were seen with each other after.

This displayed the fact that Coach had the ability to let go of grudges, which was rather nice. Also, this friendship allowed for some very fun storylines, so overall, it was definitely appreciated by fans.

He Dated May

Coach saw his best progression when he started dating May. She was the first girl that he truly was in love with. Although the pursuit of her was rather rough at times, it ultimately worked out nicely for him.

May's character was very likable too, as she was funny, but also extremely sweet. She was a huge reason for Coach maturing, so one cannot undervalue the significance of her character. Also, Coach was clearly happy with her.

The Crepe Pan With Winston

During a drunken night with Winston, the pair decided to order a crepe pan from television. This held a lot of significance, as Winston gave it to Coach as a going-away present. Yet, at first, Coach meanly rejected it, as he wanted a clean break from everything loft-related.

This made Winston very sad, but later on in the episode, it was revealed that Coach actually took it. The two then embraced and Coach admitted that he was going to miss everyone. Thus, the crepe pan was a symbolization of their friendship.

He Moved To New York With May

When Coach left the loft to move to New York with May, it was a very happy moment for him. Sure, he missed living with his best friends, but he did this to be with the woman he loved more than anything in the world.

This was a stupendous end to his main story on the series. His bad dating life was fixed, and he grew as a character entirely because of May's impact. Therefore, it was great to see him move in with somebody who was good for him.

He Came Back For Schmidt And Cece's Wedding

When Coach came back for Schmidt and Cece's wedding, it was fantastic. It was apparent that he was thrilled about them getting married, as he smiled throughout the episode. During the actual ceremony, this was seen the most.

It was wonderful that Coach was able to attend it, especially with the fact that he went with May. He got to catch up with his former roommates too in the process. Thus, it was a good day for him.

He Made Up With Nick

Nick and Coach

In Coach's final appearance on the show, there was a massive conflict between him and Nick. Nick gave Coach $71,000 to help with his new business, but it ended up failing. Coach never was able to pay him back.

However, with the help of Jess, these two ended up making up. Nick opened up stating that he was more upset that Coach never contacted him anymore. Coach felt the same way, and thankfully, the pair forgave one another and were friends again.
