The origins of Minecraft's newest monsters, the Wardens, are explored by MatPat in his latest Game Theory video. MatPat, a.k.a Matthew Patrick, has been piecing together the hidden story of Minecraft for the past three years, and he wasted no time theorizing on Minecraft's new The Wild Update, which released on June 7.

The Wild Update has brought many new things to Minecraft including mobs, items, and biomes. Perhaps the most notable additions are the new Deep Dark and Ancient Cities biomes. These areas are rare and hard to find, and they contain new types of block classified as Sculk, an odd material that looks and behaves as if it's alive. Sculk Catalysts spread by using souls of the living, and Sculk Sensors detect any sound the player makes, which sets off the Sculk Shriekers. When the Shriekers sound off, it alerts a new, blind, and devastatingly strong mob known as Wardens. These provide a new challenge to players, who now must be sneaky as they explore if they don't want one of the strongest monsters in the game to come after them.

In his latest The Game Theorists video, MatPat examines every available asset from Minecraft's The Wild Update to theorize on the purpose of the Ancient Cities and how the Warden ties into it. In a previous video, Mat guessed Wardens were creatures forged to protect these underground cities, but new evidence suggests the opposite. Within any Ancient City is a massive structure made from a new indestructible block called Reinforced Deepslate, resembling a portal. While developers have clarified that they won't be adding new dimensions, MatPat believes that this portal indicates other dimensions still exist within Minecraft's lore. The theory lies within a new music disc, Disc #5, which seems to tell the story of soldiers attempting to use portals to save their city from the Wither until things go wrong. MatPat believes the portal was built for the city to evacuate, but instead accidentally summoned a Warden, which seemingly solved their Wither problem. The full theory can be seen in the video below.

The latest game theory from MatPat sees the content creator thrilled by the addition of Ancient Cities to Minecraft, as it only strengthens his theory regarding the existence of an advanced ancient civilization of builders long before any player entered the world, and he may have found what ended that civilization. The Warden and Sculk are unlike anything else in all of Minecraft; therefore, MatPat's theory about them being from another world entirely does seem to fit. Perhaps the reason that none of the portal frames within the cities work is by design. The builders realized they brought something terrible and parasitic to their world and wanted to stop more from coming.

As Minecraft's The Wild Update is so new and expansive, there are many things players have yet to discover. In addition, some details within MatPat's theory don't have an explanation, so there may be secrets still unfound - or the theory could even prove false in its entirety. Players who want to find more on these theories may search within Minecraft's new updated world - and wait for future theory videos from MatPat and The Game Theorists.
