As fans continue to inch closer to receiving the continuation of The Expanse they've been waiting to see for over a year, the Kickstarter campaign for the comic book follow-up has now broken the week one record for comic book projects on the platform. It was previously reported that The Expanse creator James S.A. Corey (as overseeing supervisor), writer Andy Diggle (The Losers, Green Arrow: Year One), and artist Rubine (Voltron: Legendary Defender) will all be collaborating to craft The Expanse: Dragon Tooth. This will mark the first story to release for the franchise since the show aired its final episode on Amazon Prime in January 2022. To fund BOOM! Studios' Deluxe Pre-Order Edition, a $25,000 Kickstarter goal was made, only to shatter that number by making $179,251 within 24 hours of launching. After one day, it surpassed the Kickstarter campaign for BRZRKR as BOOM's biggest launch day ever.

One week later, The Expanse's Kickstarter campaign continues to shatter records. The campaign has now broken the Kickstarter record for comic book projects at $827,802 and counting. The best part is that the campaign is not even close to being done. The Expanse: Dragon Tooth's pre-order campaign will continue for 14 more days, with special surprises and hidden stretch goals to be announced all month long.

What This Means for the Future of The Expanse

The Expanse went off the air after season six more than a year ago, following an emotional series finale. The finale came just a couple of years after Amazon Prime saved the series from its sudden cancelation when it used to air on Syfy. The graphic novel follow-up, The Expanse: Dragon Tooth, is not only expected to pick up where Season 6 left off but also before the events of the seventh novel, chronicling the franchise's missing years.

The Expanse's Fans Are Keeping It Alive

The surprise ultra-success of The Expanse's Kickstarter campaign goes to show that there is still life pumping in not only the franchise but most of all, its fanbase. In just over a year since the series finale, support for The Expanse has yet to slow down. Fans arrived in drones to support this comic book continuation, far more than anyone on the creative team or at BOOM! Studios could have predicted.

Among those surprised is BOOM! Studios President of Publishing and Marketing Filip Sablik, who had this to say in a press release:

The continued, enthusiastic response from The Expanse community has blown all of us away. Our high expectations for this campaign were surpassed on day one, and to be here sharing with you all that you, the fans, have helped us break yet another record is truly the best way we could’ve hoped to start off this year. We cannot wait for you all to get your hands on this incredible story.

That same enthusiasm from fans who kept The Expanse on the air continues to keep the franchise alive well beyond its life on TV. This early success and proof of continued fan interest surely opens the door for The Expanse to continue even past the graphic novel's release, be it in other future comics or perhaps even a seventh-season relaunch. Only time will tell. For now, fans can support The Expanse: Dragon Tooth's Kickstarter campaign and keep learning about additional stretch goals for the next 14 days.
