Warning! Spoilers for Ghost Spider #10 below!
Marvel Comics has a brand new Doctor Doom, as someone very familiar is behind the mask in Spider-Gwen #10. It turns out the current Doctor Doom on Earth-65 is one of the last people you might expect, as the Fantastic Four's Sue Storm has assumed the mantle of the menacing supervillain.
Marvel's Ghost-Spider (formerly Spider-Gwen) spends her time between her own Earth-65 and Marvel's main continuity on Earth-616. In her dimension, the Fantastic Four don't exist as they do elsewhere, as Sue Storm and Reed Richards aren't a Marvel super couple. Instead, Sue and Johnny Storm are social media influencers, who went missing on a trip to Latveria five years ago. When they show up after disappearing, Gwen makes an ally out of the pair. However, in this week's Spider-Gwen, it's revealed what really happened during the pair's time on Latveria.
Ghost-Spider #10 by Seanan McGuire, Ig Guara, Ian Herring, and Clayton Cowles fills in the gap of where Sue and Johnny were during their five-year absence. It turns out they visited Latveria to train as supervillains under Doctor Doom. The pair are more than happy to offer Doom a sacrifice upon arrival, as they brought a friend with them just so he can be killed. As Doom brought out the powerful side of Sue and Johnny, Sue seemingly developed a romance with the Latverian ruler. However, when Doom crossed a line and hits Johnny, the pair killed Doom. Sue would put on his armor and become the new Doctor Doom.
When the story flips back to the present day, Sue and Johnny's evil intentions become clearer. They tell Gwen that the city is now theirs and they try to kill her. After fighting, the pair tell the public that Ghost-Spider was responsible for stealing drugs and is actually a villain - which obviously is a lie. Gwen leaves the Earth to best figure out how to combat the Storm's. While Sue and Johnny might be heroes on Earth-616, on Earth-65 they're power-hungry villains who are truly despicable.
Making Sue and Johnny Storm supervillains is a bold, fun take on the longtime heroes. Turning Sue into Doctor Doom is badass and showcases just how hungry for power she truly is. While the pair masquerade as heroes, they really are the villains of this story. Hopefully, Gwen can figure out a way to expose Sue and Johnny for who they really are.
