Ryuk smiling behind Light in Death Note

The Death Note manga is coming back in a big way in February 2021! In March 2020, the manga’s creators, writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, brought back the series for a special one-shot titled Death Note, a Kira chapter that was published in Jump Square. Ever since that chapter was published, fans have been craving the chance to own it but they have never made it available for purchase beyond that one appearance. At least, until now.

Running in Weekly Shonen Jump for 108 chapters from 2003 to 2006, Death Note has been a mainstay in the manga industry ever since it first debuted. Having sold over 30 million copies worldwide and ranking high on many an internet commentator’s “best of” lists, this dark and twisted story about oneupmanship between a young genius who finds a powerful notebook that can kill anyone, anywhere, for any reason and the detective who is trying to stop him has kept a legacy over the years that will almost certainly never be toppled. It is really just that good.

SoraNews24 reported an announcement that hit the internet on Thursday, January 28th, where it was revealed that a brand new collected volume of Death Note titled Death Note Short Stories will hit store shelves in Japan on February 4th and it will include the much craved new chapter first published last year. Also included in the 226-page volume will be other Death Note one -hots that were published between 2003 and 2020 and some four-panel strips just for kicks.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last couple of decades, you’ve likely at least heard of the series Death Note. Perhaps you came in on the manga, perhaps you came in on the anime, or perhaps you’re merely aware of it because of its reputation, but it feels like a safe bet to say that this is a series that has left a lasting impact on the world at large. While the creators have gone on to create other successful titles including Bakuman and Platinum End, it’s still nice to see that they haven’t forgotten about the classic title which brought them to the dance in the first place. This new volume is certain to be a big seller even after almost 20 years of existence, and so if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up when it is available in your country.
