Next year, Deadpool’s co-creator Rob Liefeld returns to the character in a brand new, five-issue miniseries. The new book, titled Deadpool: Badder Blood, is the follow-up to this year’s Deadpool: Bad Blood, also by Liefeld. Badder Blood promises to up the ante, delivering classic Deadpool style action, along with a host of guest stars. The first issue goes on sale in print and digital in June 2023.

A post on Marvel.com revealed more information. Deadpool: Badder Blood picks up the threads of Bad Blood’s story–namely the book’s nemesis, a mysterious villain calling himself Thumper. Liefeld explained that Thumper arose because Deadpool lacked a rogue’s gallery, and this character was an attempt at addressing this. Bad Blood left a number of questions lingering in fans’ minds, such as Thumper’s origin, and Badder Blood will answer these. In addition, fans can expect a bevy of guest stars throughout Badder Blood, with Spider-Man, Cable and Wolverine confirmed so far. Rob Liefeld plans to introduce new characters as well, such as Shatterstorm. Liefeld revealed that in Badder Blood, Thumper still has it out for Deadpool, bringing together various criminal organizations to help him accomplish his goal. Thumper hates Deadpool, and everything involved with Weapon X, and has dedicated his life to eradicating them both. Rob Liefeld will both write and illustrate the title. Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza created Deadpool; the character first appeared in 1991’s New Mutants #98. A human mercenary who received special powers thanks to genetic experimentation, Deadpool quickly became a fan favorite–and a character who bucked comic trends. Many of his contemporaries were grim and dark, but Deadpool had no problem cutting a joke–or cutting someone’s head off. Deadpool has also achieved mainstream recognition thanks to two hit live-action films, starring Ryan Reynolds: a third, set in the MCU, is scheduled for a 2024 release. Liefeld and Nicieza caught lightning in a bottle when they created Deadpool.

Deadpool is Rob Liefeld's Best Creation

Rob Liefeld has created, or co-created, a number of characters throughout his career, but none have been more enduring than Deadpool, and now Liefeld is returning to guide Deadpool’s destiny. Liefeld is correct in that Deadpool does not really have a rogue’s gallery–the hallmark of any good hero. Thumper is the perfect menace for the Merc With a Mouth, a fellow escapee from the Weapon X project, but one who took an even darker path. Deadpool must scramble to find a way to defeat Thumper and judging from the preview art, he will have company along the way. Cable and Wolverine are some of Deadpool’s oldest frenemies, but what role will they play in Badder Blood?

Rob Liefeld’s return to Deadpool in this year’s Bad Blood was well received by fans, eager to see Liefeld return to his co-creation. Bad Blood transported readers back to the 1990s, in both Deadpool, and Liefeld's heyday. Now, Rob Liefeld is returning to his most popular creation, Deadpool, in a new miniseries.
