DC Comics has just announced that comic book writer Chip Zdarsky will be taking over its main Batman title beginning with its 125th issue (featuring the Dark Knight's very own Doomsday). Known for his popular work on Marvel Comics' Daredevil and Spider-Man: Life Story, Zdarsky shared his excitement for the Caped Crusader and the work that's already begun with Batman artist Jorge Jiménez in a new interview. While new stories and secret villains were teased, it's also been revealed that Zdarsky's Batman will be putting its focus on one Robin in particular.

Currently, Joshua Williamson has been writing Batman for DC Comics since December's Batman #118 following the successful run from James Tynion IV who put the Dark Knight's Gotham City through some harrowing darkness such as The Joker War and Scarecrow's Fear State. However, Williamson is one of DC's busiest creatives as he's also currently writing Robin, Deathstroke Inc., and Justice League Incarnate (along with big crossover events coming up such as Shadow War and Dark Crisis). As a result, it looks as though DC has found their new long-term writer for Batman with Chip Zdarsky.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Zdarsky teases where he'll be taking the Dark Knight beginning with "Failsafe," a six-issue story beginning with an oversized Batman #125. Not only did Zdarsky allude to the coming of a surprising enemy from Batman's past seeking to end Bruce Wayne once and for all, but he also revealed that "Failsafe will be Batman's Doomsday" (a reference to the villain who killed Superman). Here's the newly revealed cover art (and a preview page) from Jiménez as well as variant covers for Batman #125 when it releases July 5th:

Chip Zdarsky also shared his love for Tim Drake's Robin, suggesting that he'll have a significant role in "Failsafe": "The past few years have had a lot of Batman on his own, with so many (SO MANY) Robins, etc. in his orbit...I wanted to really highlight the 'Batman & Robin' aspect of the characters while still maintaining the darker feel we're going for. Tim Drake is a favorite of mine and being able to highlight him here has been a lot of fun." Chip also made sure on his Substack newsletter to note that Marvel fans shouldn't fret, confirming that he'll still be writing Daredevil simultaneously with Batman (which does seem rather fitting).

Chip Zdarsky is no stranger to the Dark Knight as he's currently writing Batman: The Knight, a miniseries covering Bruce Wayne's early years prior to becoming Batman. He's also written anthology stories in the Batman: Urban Legends and Batman: Black and White. However, taking on the DC's flagship Batman title for the long term is incredibly exciting, allowing Zdarsky's love for the Dark Knight to truly shine when Batman #125 hits shelves on July 5th.
