Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker has reassembled the New Avengers, and their actions are proof that the team needs to make a comeback. The New Avengers were a team formed after the the original Earth's Mightiest Heroes disbanded, featuring some of Marvel's greatest and most epic heroes who worked together for quite a while in Marvel Comics' past. Now, Spider-Man has gotten a good portion of the band back together to help him fight the Kingpin and his army of crime bosses, and it's hard not to wish for more of the team going forward.

Beginning in 2005 from writer Brian Michael Bendis, the New Avengers were formed out of necessity when the Raft prison had a massive breakout of some of the Marvel Universe's worst villains and criminals. However, Captain America and Iron Man decided that enough time had passed without the Avengers, so they assembled Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, Wolverine, The Sentry, and Ronin as the permanent New Avengers. Together, this team went through significant chapters of the Marvel timeline such as House of M, as well as the first Civil War, the aftermath of which had Luke Cage leading the team as unregistered heroes who would also be big players in the following Secret Invasion storyline.

Now, Amazing Spider-Man: King's Ransom #1 from Nick Spencer, Rogê Antonio, Carlos Gomez, and Zé Carlós sees Luke Cage in a leadership role once more, leading former New Avengers such as Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist into battle with Kingpin's forces. Their actions allow Spider-Man to get through their defenses to claim the final piece of the Lifeline Tablet before Kingpin can. However, the epic display of amazing Marvel heroes in this issue proves that the New Avengers should be brought back, and could easily serve as a more street-level justice kind of team.

New-Avengers-Helping-Spider-Man

Seeing as how the current Avengers team are much more mythic and larger in scope, there's certainly a space for the New Avengers to operate concurrently, focusing on the mid-level crises that are still bad and dangerous, just not necessarily end-of-the-world type situations. Likewise, the current Avengers are pretty far removed, operating in a giant Celestial head in the Arctic as they fight gods and aliens. The New Avengers could absolutely be reassembled to be New York's protectors once more, and they wouldn't even have to compete if they wanted to get their own tower.

The New Avengers were a massive turning point for Marvel Comics when they first debuted, as they also brought with them some of the most epic and dynamic stories the publisher has ever produced. It's clear that they wouldn't be crowding in the slightest if they were to operate in New York, so it certainly seems like a no-brainer. While the war with Kingpin is still ongoing, here's hoping this reunion of the New Avengers continues once the battle ends in future issues of The Amazing Spider-Man.
