The first official look at The Nevers is revealed, offering a preview of the upcoming HBO sci-fi drama series created by Joss Whedon. Set in the last years of the Victorian era, the show features a large cast that includes Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Ann Skelly, Rochelle Neil, Amy Manson, Ben Chaplin, Nick Frost, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare.

The Nevers centers on a group known as the Touched. Consisting mostly of women, the Touched manifest extraordinary abilities. Some of those abilities can be charming, though others are distinctly disturbing. Amalia True (Donnelly) and Penance Adair (Skelly) are among with special gifts, championing the underclass and maintaining a refuge for others like them. There has been a fair amount of curiosity about the sci-fi series, thanks to the talent involved, and now audiences have a preview of what to expect.

Along with highly-anticipated events, such as Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the Friends reunion special, HBO Max unveiled the first look at The Nevers in a promotional video for the streaming service. Although the sizzle reel doesn’t reveal too much of what viewers can expect from the sci-fi series which will premiere in summer 2021, some of the women’s special abilities are teased. You can check it out below.

The Nevers made headlines recently when Whedon announced he was stepping away from the HBO series. The director of Avengers: Age of Ultron cited exhaustion and a desire to focus on his personal life as the reasons for why he made the decision. For fans of Whedon that were excited about his return to television, the announcement was undoubtedly disappointing. Given that filming had been well underway by July 2019, with production wrapping up this past October, it’s likely that Whedon’s influence will be felt all in at least some of the drama’s ten episodes. Doug Petrie and Jane Espenson are executive producers of The Nevers, along with Bernadette Caulfield. Having collaborated with Whedon extensively on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and being credited with memorable episodes such as “Earshot” and “Bad Girls”, both Espenson and Petrie will bring their own signature style to a new set of characters.

The inclusion of The Nevers in the sizzle reel is the latest indication that HBO intends to heavily push for the show. It will arrive next summer, possibly around the same time that Lovecraft Country debuted earlier this year. HBO is likely hoping that The Nevers could follow the lead of Lovecraft Country in becoming a summer success that holds its audience for the duration of its run. The series remains a bit of a mystery for the time being, but that will change as the first episode draws closer.
