Acclaimed drama film Never Rarely Sometimes Always releases early on-demand. With the coronavirus outbreak closing theaters around the world, major studios and independent producers alike are trying the move of releasing their films early on digital in hopes of capturing viewers who are looking for more entertainment options while stuck at home in quarantine. Already at-home viewers have been treated to an avalanche of theatrical content, including everything from the big budget features Bloodshot, Birds of Prey and The Call of the Wild to smaller films like Emma and Saint Frances.
Another acclaimed indie is now joining that list of early digital releases, as NBCUniversal and Focus Features drop Never Rarely Sometimes Always on-demand after putting it out theatrically on March 13th. The film will be made available next Friday, April 3, 2020 on participating on-demand services.
The winner of a special jury award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, Never Rarely Sometimes Always currently holds a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is just the latest release from Universal to receive an early digital bow, following on the heels of The Hunt and The Invisible Man (the latter of which did manage to stay in theaters long enough to top the $100 million mark at the global box office).
The synopsis for Never Rarely Sometimes Always reads as follows: “Written and directed by Eliza Hittman, the film is an intimate portrayal of two teenage girls in rural Pennsylvania. Faced with an unintended pregnancy and a lack of local support, Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) and her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) embark across state lines to New York City on a fraught journey of friendship, bravery and compassion.”
