Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Never Have I Ever Season 4.Never Have I Ever season 4 brings the show to a bittersweet end while perhaps teasing something new. Since debuting in 2020, Never Have I Ever has been commended for providing much-needed representation for young South Asian women. Loosely based on co-creator Mindy Kaling’s childhood, the show’s cultural complexities embedded within classic teen tropes have helped break many South Asian stereotypes perpetuated in mainstream media, raising further questions about its premature end with Never Have I Ever season 4.

Never Have I Ever's final season picks up with season 3's cliffhanger of Devi deciding to lose her virginity to Ben. The aftermath complicates their relationship, making them question if they are right for each other. The season also focuses heavily on Devi's college future which also does not go according to plan. However, with more struggles of romance and family drama, Never Have I Ever ends with Devi finding her path in college and beginning a relationship with Ben after confessing their love for each other. While the story seems to end, the final line has narrator John McEnroe announcing he is signing off "...for now", hinting at more to come.

Why Mindy Kaling Decided To End Never Have I Ever

Kaling explained that four seasons – and four years within the series – makes the most sense for a show covering Devi’s high school experience. “[W]e got to tell stories that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell in traditional network shows and so we feel good. We really told the story of this 15-year-old girl and that felt like the perfect amount of time," she shared (via ET). Kaling also explained that the Never Have I Ever cast is getting older, and it would start “looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old."

Co-creator Fisher added that they want to end the series “the way [they] want to on a high note and really finish out senior year,” (via Entertainment Weekly). Although the decision to end the show feels right for the co-creators, it is still bittersweet. Kaling expressed that it's “so hard to launch a show, so hard to find talent that's so good, and the truth is [she] would follow Devi until her dying day."

Why Never Have I Ever Ending On Season 4 Made Sense

While ending the hit show after Never Have I Ever season 4 might have seemed like an abrupt decision, the final season proves it was the right choice. Kaling's insistence that the series reflect the journey of a high schooler works very well as the audience feels like each new season is an exciting and nerve-wracking new chapter in Devi's young life. This is especially effective in the final season as season 4 begins and immediately has that feel of things coming to an end that teens face with their senior year of high school.

The show also handles the stakes of the final season as Devi is moving towards the future she has long thought about. Wisely, the show depicts that such plans rarely go exactly as envisioned. Also, while the series has been a high school coming-of-age story, it is shown that growth, learning, mistakes, and uncertainty does not end as soon as high school is over. There is a bittersweet side to the ending as the characters seem generally happy with the directions their individual lives are taking, even if they are taking them away from each other in most cases.

The main concern with the final season of Never Have I Ever was if the sudden ending would be a fitting one for the characters they have come to love. In that sense, the show really delivers. The main question with the ending was Devi's love triangle with Paxton and Ben which has been a part of the show since season 1. The series concludes that wonderfully by making Devi and Ben the couple that made sense while showing how good of a friend Paxton has become.

Also, Devi finds peace with leaving her mother behind while also carrying on the memory of her father, and her friends find their own paths of love and fulfillment. While fans might not have been happy to see Never Have I Ever end, it is an ending that feels satisfying.
