The Netflix series Never Have I Ever has quickly established itself as one of the best teen shows on television. A big part of what makes it so special is the complex and entertaining characters. While Devi is the center of the show, her family, friends, and love interests help make it a more colorful story.

While there are many hilarious and heartwarming quotes throughout the show, only special select quotes speak to the cast of characters. These simple lines do a great job at showing audiences what these characters are all about and their own unique personalities.

John McEnroe:

"Now You May Be Asking Yourself, Why Is Sports Icon John McEnroe Narrating This Tale?"

One of the things that immediately makes the show stand out is its choice of narrator. As the show begins, tennis legend John McEnroe is heard introducing the story of young Devi Vishwakumar.

Just as the audience begins to wonder why McEnroe is narrating, he himself addresses that very obvious question. That self-aware and somewhat out-of-place style sums up his role as narrator along with frequent references to his great athletic achievements.

Mohan:

"I Call You My Perfect Girl Because You Are Perfect To Me, Not Because I Expect You To Be Perfect All The Time."

Though he is only shown in flashbacks throughout the series, Mohan is a very integral part of the show. He is Devi's father who died before the events of the series which has a massive effect on Devi going forward and she often looks back on her memories of him to guide her.

One of the sweetest moments comes when Devi struggles with the memory of Mohan referring to her as his "perfect girl" even though she feels very flawed at times. But then she recalls his explanation that she is perfect to him. It is a moment that shows the love Mohan has for his daughter and his continued impact on her life.

Trent:

"Your Reaction To My Reaction To Their Reaction Just Made My Life, Bruh!"

Trent doesn't have much of a presence on the show besides being a comic relief character. He is the dim-witted and fun-loving high school student who chimes in with his random thoughts every now and then.

One of Trent's funniest quotes comes when showing Paxton his reaction videos to other reaction videos. It speaks to the fact that Trent doesn't seem to have a lot going on inside his head but that he also seems to find joy in the strangest of places.

Fabiola:

"One Day, You Will Walk Again. If Not, I Will Build You Legs."

Fabiola is one of Devi's best friends and also something of a genius. While the others are more concerned with social stature, Fabiola is more focused on her scientific pursuits. However, she is always there for her friends when they need her.

As Fabiola is introduced in the series, she immediately establishes these aspects of her personality. When Devi finds herself temporarily paralyzed, Fabiola is there to support her and also offers to build her some new legs.

Eleanor:

"And I Love This For Me, Finally A Gay Friend."

Devi's other best friend, Eleanor, is very different from Fabiola in many ways. She is focused on her theater dreams and, as a result, tends to be quite dramatic at times. However, like Fabiola, she is constantly a loving and supportive friend.

Eleanor is the first person Fabiola tells that she is gay. She immediately expresses her joy for her friend as well as quickly points out how wonderful it is for her and her own theater cred.

Paxton:

"You Were Right. If I'm Going To College, I Want To Earn It."

Paxton holding a test, looking confused in Never Have I Ever

When first introduced on the show, Paxton seems like the typical good-looking and popular high school kid who doesn't have much personality. But over time, he is shown to be a more determined and passionate young man, even if he isn't the best scholar.

After Paxton and Devi's romantic relationship fizzles out, she begins tutoring him. Though he initially doesn't take it seriously, Devi helps Paxton to realize what he can achieve by himself further cementing their bond and showing his more mature attitude.

Ben:

"Of Course It's Him. It's Always Been Him."

Ben is another character who is made to be more complex as the show went on. And his relationship with Devi really helps explore that. He goes from being Devi's enemy to being her boyfriend to becoming her enemy once again.

At the end of season 2, Ben sees Devi dancing with Paxton and laments that she chose him over Ben. This speaks to Ben's complicated feelings of both hating and loving Devi at the same time.

Kamala:

"I Could Never Be A Model. I'm Too Curvaceous."

One of the funniest running jokes in the show is Kamala's seeming perfection and the fact that she doesn't notice it. She is a beautiful woman but is constantly underplaying that fact.

Of course, Kamala is more than just a beautiful woman and is a talented scientist in her own right. But her trouble seeing herself as others see her speaks to Kamala's struggle with standing up for herself and finding her own path which is a big part of her journey.

Nalini:

"I Feel Like A Stranger Here And I Don't Have A Support System And Frankly, Without Your Father Around I Just Feel Like I Am Really Struggling To Raise You."

Though it is mostly a teen show, Nalini is one of the best characters on Never Have I Ever. She is shown to be a mother who struggles with raising her daughter, with the death of her husband, and with everyday complications.

Nalini is a strict mother, but in a rare moment when she allows herself to be honest with Devi about what she is dealing with, Nalini reveals so much about herself. It helps to explain so much about her and makes her an even more likable character.

Devi:

"Trust Me. Whatever S*** You Have Going On, My S*** Is Bigger. I Have The Bigger S***."

Devi is a terrific protagonist for the series as she is a likable yet flawed character. The first two seasons of the show see Devi trying to start a new path for herself and escape the trauma she has recently experienced. This leads to some selfish decisions while still allowing Devi to be sympathetic.

After neglecting her friends and their own problems, Devi suggests her issues are more important. It is a self-centered thing to say, but it is also not hard to see while she would be more focused on herself with everything she is dealing with.
