Never Have I Ever is Netflix's latest coming of age comedy series and it has quite a few connections to - and characters from - The Office. The series, created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, focuses on a high school student who also happens to be a first-generation Indian American. It's loosely based on Kaling's upbringing with a mix of fictionalized teenage drama and familial struggles.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan stars as Devi Vishwakumar, the main character at the focus of Never Have I Ever looking to reinvent herself during her sophomore year. Devi recently dealt with the loss of a family member as well as her own health struggle which only complicates matters. Rather than face the grief, Devi dives headfirst into transforming her image in the mind of her classmates. Along the way, she ends up hurting the ones she cares about the most.
Aside from newcomer Ramakrishnan, Never Have I Ever features a handful of bright stars including Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, Ramona Young, and Lee Rodriguez. In addition, Devi's family members are played by season actresses Poorna Jagannathan and Richa Moorjani. The Never Have I Ever cast includes other notable names and stars of The Office will surely recognize a few key figures, one of which who had a hand in the casting decisions.
Mindy Kaling
As mentioned, Kaling is one of the co-creators of Never Have I Ever and the basis of the coming of age tale. Although she doesn't appear on-screen, her presence is felt through Devi's character. Kaling's journey in the entertainment business actually began on The Office. Viewers might recognize her for portraying Kelly Kapoor but she also served as a writer, director, and executive producer on the series. Kaling then created and starred in The Mindy Project while starring in movies like The Five-Year Engagement, The Night Before, A Wrinkle in Time, and Ocean's 8. She also recently hand a hand in Late Night and Hulu's Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Sendhil Ramamurthy
Sendhil Ramamurthy plays Mohan Venkatesan, Devi's father, in Never Have I Ever. The character dies from a heart attack prior to the events of the series but is shown through a series of flashbacks. Before appearing on the Netflix show, Ramamurthy played Ravi on The Office. Ravi was a pediatrician who started dating Kelly in season 8 before the pair got engaged and moved to Ohio. She and Ravi returned in the series finale but Kelly eventually ditched him for Ryan, her ex-boyfriend. Ramamurthy is also known for his roles in Heroes, Covert Affairs, and The Flash.
Angela Kinsey
Angela Kinsey serves as a guest star in Never Have I Ever appearing multiple episodes as Vivian Gross, the mother of Ben. The Gross family is extremely rich and Ben's parents were rarely around due to their lavish trips. Fans of The Office will easily recognize the actress since she portrayed Angela Martin, the stern accountant, in all nine seasons of the NBC sitcom. Since The Office, Kinsey has worked on New Girl, Your Family or Mine, Haters Back Off, Be Our Chef, and BlackAF.
